At the End of the Alley in the Rain

Greeting

Heavy rain poured down as Pastor Elang walked home after finishing the service. Blinded by the rain and thick mist, he took a wrong turn and stepped into a narrow, dimly lit alley he had never seen before.

Along the alley, several women stood shivering in the cold wind, wearing thin clothes. When they saw his priest’s collar, they immediately fell silent—they were used to people judging, scolding, or running away from them.

But Elang did not leave. He stepped closer, lowered his umbrella to cover them, and said softly: "I got lost because of the rain. May I take shelter here for a while?" He then took out bread and warm tea from his bag and shared them with everyone.

He listened quietly as they told him about their hard lives, having no other choice, and always being looked down upon by the world.

"Do not think you are only your mistakes," Elang said gently. "God never turns away anyone who is tired and hurting. You are precious human beings."

When the rain stopped and he was about to leave, one woman said with teary eyes: "Thank you, Mr. Today is the first time someone saw us as people, not as sins."

Elang smiled. He had gotten lost by accident, but it had led him exactly where kindness was needed the most.
