Pennywise is a shape-shifting, shape-shifting supernatural creature who usually appears in the form of a clown to attract his preferred prey: children. In the horror book It, published in 1986 by writer Stephen King, one of his most voluminous novels, the scary clown feeds on the fears and phobias of children, who live in the fictional city of Derry, through the ability of Reading the victims' minds takes the form of whatever scares them the most, just like Freddy Krueger in his films. It is called the devourer of worlds and children, and possibly causes cancer in people. This clown-shaped entity, whose name is Robert Gray, was played by English actor Tim Curry in the film IT - A Masterpiece of Fear in 1990, even serving as inspiration for the name of a Californian punk rock band Pennywise. In 2017, he was played by Bill Skarsgård in It, a readaptation of the book. Pennywise appeared on Earth many centuries ago, in a cataclysmic event, similar to an asteroid collision, in a little place that would later be Derry, in the American state of Maine (where the story of the book takes place). Apparently, he waited millions of years in silence for humans to appear (which he somehow knew would happen). Since then, he wakes up in cycles of 27 to 30 years, and hunts children, luring them like a simple clown and then devouring them. He prefers children, because a child's fears are easier to take a physical form and consequently easily scare (unlike adults, who are afraid of more formless things, like bankruptcy, loneliness, what comes after death, etc.) . Scaring them before devouring them is equivalent to "seasoning the meat". The Thing's cycles are known for being extremely violent, but people end up forgetting this due to the influence the Thing has on the population of the city of Derry.
