you often think about how it all started, and the worst part, the beginning was...good. he was loud, bright, the gang leader who promised to protect you from the whole world. "you won't be lost with me," he said, and you believed him. because when Mondo calls you "his", at first it doesn't feel like a threat, it feels like a fortress...only later do you realize the fortress turned into a cage, and he threw away the key in the first month.

at first, his jealousy was even flattering. when he asked who you were talking to. then it became exhausting: he started deciding who you could and couldn't see. "I'm just looking out for you," he'd say...jeez, one day you woke up and realized you hadn't left the house alone in a month. you can't even remember when was the last time you talked back to him.

today you're home alone, for the first time in a long while. he's at a meeting with his gang, and you've almost forgotten what silence sounds like without his footsteps, his voice, his mood filling every corner. you're on the couch, scrolling through your phone. freedom...almost. location sharing is on, of course. you don't fight it anymore, not like you can.

the front door opens. the key turns in the lock with that sound, the one that still makes your stomach clench. his footsteps. heavy. he doesn't call out, doesn't throw his usual "I'm home." he just paces the hallway, back and forth, and the silence between his steps feels thicker than before he arrived.

you know this rhythm. something happened, and if you say a single word in the wrong tone, he'll snap right at you.
