The first foods Azul tried upon reaching dry land were grilled meat and fish, which, according to him, tasted different from when he ate them underwater. If he had to change dormitories, Azul would choose Scarabia, as he wants to make contacts with students from the Scorching Sands to profit from the country's rare items, such as "teas, spices, and fabrics," although he initially claims to be primarily interested in the culture of the Scorching Sands. To date, of the main actors, Azul has signed contracts with (in order): Dire Crowley (contracted to build the Monster Lounge in exchange for the termination of the previous year's student contracts and 10% of the Monster Lounge's profits). Leona Kingscholar (hired Azul for a potion that would amplify Ruggie's signature spell. The exact terms of the contract are unknown, although Leona explicitly denied Azul the "King's Roar" in return). Ace Trappola Deuce Spade (twice; the second time to temporarily obtain "Limit Bet" to battle Rollo Flamme). Sinister Yuu/MC (took the Decrepit Dormitory as collateral, since Yuu/MC doesn't possess magic). Sam (hired (through Floyd) for the rights to Sam's Mystery Drink in exchange for a rare red stone from the Scorching Sands) Floyd Leech (changed Floyd's voice to a deeper voice in exchange for "Bind the Heart". The contract was later voided because Azul couldn't stand Floyd's new voice). Rielle Corallia (manipulated into trading "Path to Your World" with Azul in exchange for help escaping a trap during the competition between the NRC and the RSA. The contract explicitly stipulated that it would expire at the end of the current trial).

He tends to have many hobbies and has a habit of multitasking. He himself says that he works hard just to increase his value before entering the world of work. [13][14] He wants to surpass Riddle's scores, but it is suggested that the reason he hasn't been able to do so yet is that Azul is involved in too many things at once to really compete with him. [15] He is very envious of Cater's Signature Spell and wishes it were his own. [ 16 ] Due to his octopus-mermaid nature, Azul tends to get low grades in flying class and doesn't seem to like flying on a broomstick, refusing to use it even in an emergency. However, he says that he doesn't actually dislike flying, although this may not be true. [17][18][19] The reason seems to have more to do with balance and a problem with heights. In fact, Azul may be afraid of great heights: after his first dreamlike crossing, Azul even faints and is forced to take medication to recover. [20] On one occasion, Ruggie mentioned that Azul's flying technique was so desperate that he couldn't look at her. Idia himself states that he and Azul are close competitors in the flying class in a race to the bottom. [21][22] Between him, Jade, and Floyd, Azul seems to be the worst at flying on a broomstick, while Floyd is the best. Despite this difficulty, Azul tends to try very hard to get a decent vote. [23][24] He owns only one pair of glasses, but his laboratory safety glasses are also prescription. [ 25 ] [ 26 ] He appears to be able to see even without glasses; however, the reason you decided to wear them is related both to correcting your vision and to your image. [25]

"Azul" is the Spanish and Portuguese word for the color blue. "Ashen" (gray) in her surname refers to the light gray color; "grotto" (grotto), a word meaning cave, alludes to Ariel's secret grotto, where she kept human artifacts, and/or Ursula's cave, where she conducted her business. Azul is based on Ursula, a villainous sea witch from the movie The Little Mermaid (1989). He can play the piano and was in a band with Jade (bass) and Floyd (drums) in elementary school. [ 6 ] According to Floyd, its octopus shape looks very tender and delicious. He and the Leech twins did not go home during the winter holidays in Book 4 because the ice floating in the Coral Sea makes swimming difficult. [8] Azul used to be chubby and also a crybaby. [ 7 ] [ 4 ] Azul harbors great affection and respect for his grandmother, stating that she inspired his own work. When he was young, Azul visited his grandmother frequently, and she spoiled him and taught him magic. However, when Azul nearly caused an accident with a potion, he was severely reprimanded by his grandmother. Looking back, although she frightened him at the time, Azul is grateful for that scolding and describes her as someone who loves him deeply. He can use all eight of his tentacles, in addition to his hands, to write. Azul has a habit of collecting coins. He discovered his hobby as a child and used to collect coins near a shipwreck. Azul was once a classmate of Prince Rielle Corallia. Azul doesn't like having his picture taken. Since Azul tends to be a methodical and strategic person, he never leaves anything to chance or luck, even when it comes to simple games. [9][10][11] He hates the influence of luck so much that he has learned to control the roll of the dice and, on another occasion, eliminates chance from what was originally conceived as a game of chance during a draw. [12][9]

His signature spell is called "Closed," which takes the form of a golden contract scroll. [3] As long as someone signs a contract with him, he can confiscate one of the target's abilities. The offered ability can be magical or physical, such as a beautiful singing voice or the ability to swim fast. [4] If the target doesn't have abilities that Azul desires (or, in a rare case, if the target refuses to offer an ability), he can collect something of value instead. The consequences of failing to fulfill the contract's terms vary; in one case, the defaulting party was forced to work for Azul indefinitely. Contracts can be voided at any time if Azul chooses to terminate the agreement (terms can be set in the contract terms at Azul's discretion).

In fact, Azul is able to absorb a target's powers directly without using her contracts. However, this would result in the rapid accumulation of blemishes, as well as causing pain to the target. The contract functions as a control mechanism to prevent the overuse of her magical powers and the excessive accumulation of blemishes. [5]

During his youth, Azul was frequently the target of jokes and bullying because of his appearance, which resulted in his isolation from his peers. He spent most of his time learning and perfecting his signature spell. At one point, the young Jade and Floyd met Azul and became interested in him, eventually discovering that he was responsible for the recent "switches" and finding Azul's achievements fascinating.

Little is known about his upbringing or relationship with his family, but Azul speaks briefly about his mother and stepfather. His mother is the manager of the family restaurant, and Azul greatly respects her business. She also invests in the Mostro Lounge. His stepfather is a lawyer, whom Azul considers kind but highly competent in his work, and he shared his knowledge of law and contracts with Azul. Azul also mentions his grandmother, who is a powerful mage, helping the less fortunate and the poor. [2] He describes his entire family as "intelligent and resourceful," and Azul is very proud of them.

Azul is well-known in the NRC not only for his status as administrator of the Octavinelle house, but also for rumors that he can grant any wish in exchange for a person's most prized quality. However, his deals only work to his own benefit, leaving the other party in trouble. At first glance, Azul seems "friendly" and willing to "help" others. He is also skilled at manipulating words so that a deal appears to perfectly fulfill the client's desires, when in reality those words have been chosen to contain "gray areas," as in a scam. Azul is also known for his cunning, being able to convince almost anyone to sign a contract with him. Furthermore, he demonstrates great skill in all areas.

However, when the truth is revealed in Book 3, it is discovered that Blue was always very insecure about himself, especially regarding his "chubby" octopus form (as Floyd put it), as he suffered bullying and was socially isolated by the other mermaids. Although Blue was bullied for his slowness and tendency to expel ink like an octopus-mermaid, he also realized the advantages of his form from a young age. Using his many limbs and the ability to expel ink to his advantage, he studied magic relentlessly and managed to develop his signature spell while still young.

Following the overblot incident, Azul still harbors insecurities about his past, but he has managed to accept his shameless self. Furthermore, he has stopped deceiving his clients. Instead of negotiating through contracts, he now uses a points system where clients can purchase drinks to earn points and exchange them for a consultation with Azul (where he offers the same wish-fulfillment services as in his contract system). This reflects Azul's penchant for making money.

As the dormitory caretaker, Azul's uniform differs slightly from that of the other Octavinelle students, the most striking feature being the long coat draped over his shoulders. Azul also wears heavily lined dark purple eyeliner when in uniform. The top part of the uniform consists of a black double-breasted suit jacket, a lavender-grey scarf, a button-down shirt underneath, and a bow tie. The uniform also includes a black sash at the waist, trousers, white gloves, and a black fedora hat.

While most Octavinelle students wear a lilac shirt and white bow tie, Azul wears a white shirt and a purple bow tie. His double-breasted suit has a purple lining, and Azul keeps it unbuttoned. His grey-lavender scarf covers his shoulders and sits under the lapels of his suit. The scarf has fringes at the ends, with the Octavinelle symbol printed on one of them.

Azul's signature coat, in a lavender-grey shade, is not worn with the sleeves open, but rather draped over the suit. It reaches to the knees and has a purple lining.

Azul wears black dress shoes with block heels and silver buckles on the sides. Underneath the shoes, he wears long purple socks with a pattern of circles and wavy lines. His white gloves are buttoned at the wrist. The black fedora hat has a gray-lavender band wrapped around it and tied with an elegant bow, on which is a purple brooch in the shape of a spiral shell.

Azul is a young man with fair skin and a slightly above-average height. He has short, wavy, cool-toned light gray hair. His hair is parted to the right, with the ends curling upwards, and a long strand framing the left side of his face. He also has an undercut hairstyle. His eyes are bluish-purple, but appear to be a light fluorescent blue when they are in their translucent form. A small mole is located below his lip on the left side of his face. He almost always wears rectangular, half-rimmed silver glasses. He is frequently depicted with a discreet smile and a calculating look.

Octavinelle's student residence administrator. He runs a café on campus and makes a point of gathering information by any means necessary. His benevolent appearance hides an extremely calculating personality.
