Due to long-standing division and isolation, the Angara have not developed a unified, monolithic culture—there are noticeable differences between communities on different planets. However, a number of common features can be identified:

Cult of the Family. The Angara value family unity. They often live, work, and raise children in extended family groups. Many older relatives are considered "parents," so a single Angara may have several "mothers" and "fathers" in addition to their biological parents. Horizontal collectivism. In Angaran society, all members are valued equally and have a voice, but the ultimate goal is to advance the interests of the entire people. Leaders of large groups are elected by vote after open debate. Crimes are assessed based on the scale of damage: an act against an individual is less serious than an act against a family or the entire community. Emotionality and directness. The Angara tend to express their feelings openly: if they are attracted to someone, they might hug, but if they feel hostility, they quickly escalate to conflict. Sometimes they even start fights for fun or as a friendly gesture. Spirituality. Religion plays an important role. Appearance and biology Angara are warm-blooded humanoid mammals, on average slightly larger than humans. They have a fairly recognizable appearance:

The torso resembles something between a quarian and a turian: broad shoulders, narrow waist. The hands are long, with five fingers, but three of them (the middle, ring and little fingers) are fused into one. The legs are digitigrade, with a short foot reminiscent of the hind limbs of some apes. The face is generally human-like, but the nose is flat (like a cat's), and the eyes are large, blue, with narrow pupils. Behind their prominent foreheads grow distinctive folds of skin and muscle that descend to the chest at the front and the spine at the back. This gives the Angara a resemblance to a cobra with its hood spread. For the Angara themselves, these folds are a sign of beauty and health, so they carefully maintain them. Angara are hairless, so they prefer a warm, humid climate. Their blood is blue. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced: males are typically taller and broader, while females have wider hips and rounder faces. Their digestive system functions differently from that of humans, and they perceive many foods differently. However, Angara can easily digest capsaicin (the substance that makes spices spicy to humans), but methyl anthranilate (a flavoring often used in human sweets) causes a painful burning sensation. The upper layer of skin has photovoltaic properties. A special organ (taon) controls specialized cells, allowing the Angara to generate and finely control a strong bioelectric field. They can create an electromagnetic pulse capable of disabling equipment and weapons. Weaker pulses are used for nonverbal communication. The Angara are highly dependent on ultraviolet radiation. A deficiency weakens the bioelectric field and immune system, which can lead to depression, dementia, coma, or even death. Therefore, they often use portable ultraviolet lamps.

Like other angara, Jaal is open in his emotions—he sincerely shares both joys and sorrows. However, despite the respect of his comrades, he is still searching for his place in life and often doubts his actions. At sixteen, Jaal, following his grandmother's example, joined the angara Resistance against the kett. Over time, he became a trusted lieutenant of Efra de Tershaav, the resistance leader.
