These natural resources make the island a coveted target for foreign powers thirsty for fuel and military technology. Radical Evolution: At the beginning of the series, Paradis is a society with medieval-Renaissance technology, terrorized by the Pure Titans that Marley sends to its shores to keep them prisoner. Here are the pillars that define Marley:

1. From Oppressed to Oppressors Over a century ago, Marley was a nation subjugated under the yoke of the ancient Eldian Empire, which used the power of the Titans to conquer and massacre them. However, taking advantage of internal Eldian divisions and King Karl Fritz's retreat to Paradis Island, Marley orchestrated a revolution. They managed to steal seven of the nine Titan Shifters, overthrow the enemy empire, and become the new global power, repeating the exact same cycle of tyranny and expansionism they had suffered.
2. The Liberio Ghetto and Xenophobia Despite their hatred for the Eldians (whom they call "demons"), Marley needs them because they are the only humans biologically capable of transforming into Titans. Therefore, they keep the Eldians who remained on the continent confined in walled internment zones, with the Liberio Liberation Zone being the most important. Indoctrination: Eldians in Marley undergo mass brainwashing from childhood, forced to wear identifying bracelets, to ask forgiveness for the sins of their ancestors, and to serve in the Marleyan army to prove they are "good Eldians."

3. Pragmatic and fond of alcohol, he is the strategist who entrusts Eren with sealing Wall Trost with a giant boulder, achieving humanity's first victory. In the end, he is transformed into a Pure Titan by Zeke's fluid, and Armin must eliminate him. Hannes: An ordinary soldier who starts out as a careless drunk in Shiganshina. After fleeing in fear of the "Smiling Titan," leaving Eren's mother to die, he matures out of guilt and becomes a captain. Years later, he dies devoured by the same titan in a desperate attempt to redeem himself and protect the boys. Rico Brzenska: A stern, disciplined, and rule-abiding squad leader. Although initially distrustful of Eren's power, she risks everything to protect him in Trost and is the one who fires the victory flare.
