Division of People and Military

Society within the walls was highly stratified, with a strict social hierarchy and a military divided into three main branches. Social Divisions The population was organized into social classes based largely on proximity to the center of the kingdom. The rich and noble lived in safety within Wall Sina, while the poor, including farmers and the residents of the often-criminalized Underground city beneath the capital, resided closer to the more dangerous outer walls. Military Divisions The military was the primary defense against the Titans and had three specialized branches, plus a preparatory Training Corps: Survey Corps: The expeditionary force that ventured outside the walls to explore and fight Titans, suffering the highest casualty rates but striving to reclaim lost territory and learn about the enemy. Their insignia is the "Wings of Freedom". Garrison Regiment: The largest military body responsible for patrolling and maintaining the walls, as well as protecting towns and citizens during a Titan attack. Many main characters started here. Military Police Brigade: The elite internal law enforcement and royal guard, operating exclusively within the safety of Wall Sina. Only the top ten graduates from each training class could join, and the branch was known for corruption and incompetence due to lack of actual combat experience.

The walls

The three concentric walls in Attack on Titan are named Wall Maria, Wall Rose, and Wall Sina. They were named after the three daughters of Ymir Fritz, the original holder of the Titan powers. The Three Walls Name Location Social Class Association Wall Maria Outermost wall Home to farmers and the poor; highest risk of Titan invasion. The Shiganshina District, hometown of the main trio, was located here. Wall Rose Middle wall Home to the general populace, including the middle and some upper classes. Trost District was a prominent area within this wall. Wall Sina Innermost wall Home to the royal government, nobility, and the elite; lowest risk of Titan invasion. The capital city, Mitras, is located here, along with an impoverished underground district.

Characters and the Walls Key characters are heavily involved with the history and defense of the walls: King Karl Fritz: The 145th King of Eldia who originally created the walls using millions of Colossus Titans and erased his people's memories to live in a peaceful, isolated "paradise" on Paradis Island. Eren Yeager: The protagonist, whose home in Wall Maria's Shiganshina District was destroyed by the Colossal and Armored Titans, driving his quest for revenge. He eventually uses the power of the Founding Titan to unharden the walls and unleash the Wall Titans as part of the Rumbling. Hange Zoë: A brilliant and curious Survey Corps commander who first discovers the existence of the Titans within the walls after the Female Titan damages Wall Sina. Pastor Nick: A high-ranking member of the "Church of the Walls," a religious group that worships the walls as divine and keeps the secret of the Wall Titans until forced to reveal information by Hange. Reiner Braun and Bertholdt Hoover: Marleyan warriors who, as the Armored and Colossal Titans, were responsible for the initial breach of Wall Maria and later Wall Rose.

mission and memories

The people living within the Walls in Attack on Titan, before the truth about the outside world was revealed, generally shared a mindset defined by fear, complacency, ignorance, and a desperate reliance on the Walls for survival. Their worldview was shaped by a century of propaganda and isolation. Key Aspects of their Mindset Existential Fear of Titans: The primary psychological driver was the constant, pervasive fear of the Titans, mindless humanoid giants who consumed humans on sight. The Walls were the only perceived safe haven for the last remnants of humanity. Belief in Being the Last of Humanity: The public was taught that humanity outside the Walls had been completely wiped out by the Titans. This belief reinforced their isolation and made the idea of an outside world seem like a dangerous, forbidden fantasy. Complacency and Apathy: Because the Walls had held for a hundred years, many citizens developed a sense of false security and complacency, exemplified by characters like Sergeant Hannes early in the series. They had forgotten the true horror of life outside the Walls. The Walls as Divine Protection: A prominent religion, the Church of the Walls, worshipped the Walls as a sacred, untouchable divine gift from God. This belief discouraged any attempt to explore or question the nature of the Walls, helping the government maintain control and secrecy. Rigid Social Hierarchy: Society was strictly stratified, with the wealthiest and most powerful living safely in the inner Wall Sina, while the poor and common folk lived in the riskier outer districts. This reinforced a class-based mentality, with inner-wall residents often viewing outer-wall residents as expendable in times of crisis. Distrust of the Survey Corps: The Survey Corps, the only military branch that regularly ventured outside the Walls, was often viewed with a mix of awe and disdain by the general populace. They were seen as reckless individuals who wasted lives and resources on a hopeless mission.

promo

Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) follows Eren Yeager and friends Mikasa & Armin, living in walled cities for protection from giant, man-eating Titans, until a Colossal Titan breaches their home, leading Eren to vow vengeance and join the Survey Corps to fight Titans, uncover their origins, and reveal humanity's true, complex history involving ancient curses, warring nations (Marley/Eldia), Titan Shifters, and a devastating cycle of conflict, shifting from a survival story to a deep political & moral epic.

The Setup (Walls & Titans): Humanity survives within three concentric walls (Maria, Rose, Sina) for a century, believing themselves to be the last remnants. Titans are giant humanoids that devour people, seemingly for pleasure, and the military uses Omni-Directional Mobility Gear (ODM) to fight them.

The Inciting Incident: A Colossal Titan appears, breaches Wall Maria, and Eren's mother is eaten, fueling his rage and vow for revenge. Eren, Mikasa, and Armin join the Survey Corps (Scout Regiment) to fight Titans and explore the world. Key Plot Developments & Twists: Eren's Secret: Eren discovers he can transform into a Titan (Attack Titan) and later gains other Titan powers, inheriting memories and fighting other Titan Shifters. The World Outside: The story expands beyond the walls, revealing a larger world where Eldians (people who can become Titans) are persecuted by the nation of Marley, who fears their power. The Truth of the Titans: Titans are transformed humans (Eldians), and their power stems from Ymir Fritz, a slave who gained power 2,000 years prior, leading to a cycle of oppression and war. The Rumbling: The series culminates in Eren initiating "The Rumbling," unleashing millions of colossal Titans to destroy the world, seeking freedom for his people but becoming a global threat. Themes: Survival, freedom, revenge, the cycle of hatred, war's cost, and humanity's capacity for both good and evil.
