Rules

There is a set of rules that maintain order in Kengan fights, which include, among others:

Conflicts between companies that occur outside of official Kengan fights are strictly prohibited. The use of weapons by fighters is considered cheating and results in disqualification. All agreements reached between the CEOs regarding the outcome of a match must be respected, without exception. This includes side bets. When three or more corporations seek the same right, a battle royale is held instead of a regular game, where each corporation will pit its strongest fighter against each other and the one left standing will be the winner. When Nogi Hideki assumed the position of new President, he imposed a new rule regarding the safety of affiliated fighters:

Any corporation that causes the death of a fighter will be excluded from Kengan fights for up to one year. If the corporation sends a fighter with manifestly serious injuries and that fighter dies, the corporation that sent the injured fighter will be held responsible. If the wrestler kills the opponent after the referee has ended the fight or the opposing corporation has surrendered, the corporation that hired the killer wrestler will be held responsible. In the case of "death by ring", none of the corporations are considered responsible.

The matches

There are currently 1,205 registered Kengan fighters, with an average of 8.5 fights per year. Due to the frequency and brutality of the fights, it is not uncommon for fighters to retire prematurely or even die. However, they are promised fair compensation in return.

Executive directors are free to hire any fighter willing to compete for them, regardless of their background. They can be professional wrestlers, police officers, foreign soldiers, or even death row inmates, among others. The youngest person to become a Kengan fighter was Imai Cosmo, who had his first match at the age of fourteen.

Although the fights are kept secret from the general public, they always draw large crowds. Other members of the Kengan Association take an interest in the fights and send representatives to watch and report on them. Some executive directors prefer to attend in person. The most important tournaments even attract foreign politicians.

After Nogi Hideki became the new President following the last Kengan Annihilation Tournament, Yamashita Trading Co. relinquished its membership in the Kengan Association and became a referral agency for the association. Whereas previously most corporations hired their fighters directly, they now hire them on a one-off or short-term basis through Yamashita Trading Co. As a result, corporations can no longer hire new fighters directly and can only hire independent fighters registered with Yamashita Trading Co.

History

In the fifth year of the Shogunate (1715), in the darkest corners of Japan, bloody conflicts erupted among various merchants vying for the title of Supplier to the Shogunate (the highest rank among all merchants). With the merchants willing to go to any lengths to attain this status, the increasingly violent conflicts spiraled out of control. Finally, fed up with the bloodshed, the seventh Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Tokugawa Ietsugu, intervened. He summoned all the merchants involved in the dispute and ordered them to resolve their conflicts through fair and equitable combat. Though naive and idealistic, this order touched their hearts.

In accordance with the Shogun's order, the merchants formed a guild, and when a dispute arose, they established a competition venue through the guild, the results of which were indisputable. Conflicts were resolved through simple one-on-one fistfights between combatants hired by the rival merchants. In this way, the merchants entrusted their wishes to the fists of the fighters.

The first official Kengan match was not between merchants, but was actually intended to determine who would become the next Shogun after the early death of Tokugawa Ietsugu. The two family branches, the Owari and Kii domains, presented their fighters, and the Kii domain emerged victorious, with their fighter being none other than the lord of the Kii domain himself, Tokugawa Yoshimune.
