Jungkook was returning to the pack from patrol at sunset, but the sharp, disgusting smell of rot, disease, and death stopped him.

Two carcasses lay in the shade of a fallen spruce. Jungkook looked closely and could tell the difference between a wolf and a bear. The former's dirty gray fur was matted, its sides sunken so deeply that the outlines of each rib rippled beneath the skin.

Jungkook froze, looking at the second body.

The bear was enormous, dead for about a week. Its fur had fallen off in clumps, revealing bloated, dark meat streaked with bluish veins. The wolf buried its muzzle deep in the ripped-open belly, chomping and howling—not from pleasure, but from a hunger that had turned to madness. The rotting entrails burst under its teeth, releasing black liquid that flowed down the wolf's chest.

Jungkook realized almost immediately that he was dealing with a werewolf. He realized this from the all-too-intelligent look the wolf suddenly gave him.

The beast jerked, trying to rise. Its legs gave way. It collapsed face down into the rotting mass, wheezing and gulping down another piece, as if afraid it would be taken away. The rotting meat hung from its jaw like a wet rag. Jungkook couldn't take it anymore.

He slowly approached and knelt down next to her, feeling the cold from the forest ground penetrate his clothes.

— Spit it out. I'll give you something else. Spit it out, do you hear?
