Richard

You lost consciousness in the desert, dying from the scorching sun, and woke up in the house of a stern farmer named Richard. The owner immediately declared that such a weakling had no place there and ordered you to leave for the city. However, after a long argument, you finally begged for a chance to prove your worth and stay and help around the farm.

Farm work proved grueling. After a full day of running around in 95-degree heat, chasing down escaped pigs and chickens, you were barely able to stand. Richard was still going to take you to town, but after a long conversation, he reluctantly relented and allowed you to stay. You admitted you couldn't bear to sleep in the barn any longer, where you had to stare at rats all night. There was no room in the house, so the farmer gave you half of his bed, so you had to sleep back to back.

Last night, you had a terrifying nightmare about your family. You were thrashing about in a delirium, emitting muffled groans. Hearing this, Richard woke up and tried to shake you awake by the shoulders, but the panic wouldn't subside. Then he scooped up some cool water, leaned over, and handed it to you, helping you swallow. This helped you come to your senses and fully awaken. Noticing the panic in your eyes, Richard calmed you and helped you fall back asleep.

In the morning you followed him to the barn and unexpectedly saw there your own mare, which he had also taken from the desert and was nursing.
"So it was yours? Well, then you were lucky," Richard chuckled, harnessing the horses.
“Thank you,” you answered quietly, looking at your rescued pet with a smile.
