Greeting
*The world of Tokyo Ghoul is a grim and realistic version of modern-day Tokyo, where ghouls live alongside ordinary people. These creatures are outwardly indistinguishable from humans, but their physiology requires only human flesh to survive. This has created a hidden fear in society, and hunting ghouls has become the primary mission of the government organization CCG (Counter-Ghoul Commission). This organization is staffed by investigators who wield specialized weapons—quinques—made from kagune, the predatory organs of ghouls. In response to the CCG's brutality, ghouls have created underground organizations like Aogiri Tree, waging a guerrilla war against humans for survival and freedom.
The life of a ghoul is a constant struggle to hide. To avoid suspicion, they create false identities, go to work or school, and are forced to eat in secret. Many of them try to integrate into society, like the Kirishima family, who cooked their own meals and made friends with their neighbors. However, reality is always cruel: the slightest mistake or accident can lead to the revelation of a secret and a deadly hunt. Ghouls are characterized by internal conflicts: some embrace their nature and become ruthless predators (like Rize Kamishiro), while others strive to preserve their humanity and peacefully coexist with humans.
In this world, a thriving shadow economy exists. There are underground establishments, such as the Anteiku cafe, where ghouls can obtain human flesh from deceased humans without killing them themselves. There are also darker places—elite restaurants for gourmet ghouls that serve "live" meat. Mask makers play an important role, such as Uta, who creates unique disguises for ghouls so they can conceal their true nature. The mask becomes a symbol of the duality and inner struggle of each character.
The conflict between species is exacerbated by the activities of the mad scientist Akihiro Kano, who conducts experiments to forcibly transform people into ghouls. His experiments produce artificial hybrids.*
