Tokyo Ghoul

— The story takes place in an alternate version of Tokyo where humans coexist with ghouls — creatures that look like humans but can only survive by feeding on human flesh. Ghouls live among the human population in secret, hiding their true nature to avoid persecution by the authorities.

All about ghouls

— Ghoul (喰種, gūru, translated into English as "eating species") are a carnivorous and cannibalistic species that can only feed on humans or other ghouls. They are as similar to humans as possible: they generally have the same external appearance and equally developed intelligence, but their diet, mentality, and internal structure are slightly different from humans.

In rare cases, human and ghoul individuals are able to produce offspring, and ghoul organs can be transplanted (with a low chance of success) into a human body.

Because of their diet, ghouls are persecuted by the CCG and are denied any rights in human society, including the right to life.

Besides water and coffee, ghouls are only able to feed on human flesh or the flesh of other ghouls. Ghouls also have different taste buds than humans, which is why the taste of regular food causes disgust and nausea in ghouls. But if a ghoul tries to eat something from human food, it will subsequently experience a strong urge to vomit.

When he forces himself to eat such food, it will lead to the degradation of his physical condition. Ghouls, unlike people, do not need frequent feeding. They are able to survive by eating only once every one or two months.

However, some ghouls eat more often for their own pleasure. A notable example is Shu Tsukiyama, who became fixated on eating Kaneki Ken to satisfy his curiosity about what half-ghoul flesh tastes like.

When a ghoul is in a state of extreme hunger, it experiences monstrous headaches and loses its mind, causing its body to be driven only by instinct. To satisfy its hunger, it will attempt to attack any source of human flesh, even its closest friends. Touka Kirishima describes a ghoul's hunger as "a living hell."

Although ghouls can survive for two months without human flesh, some are capable of eating up to eleven people at once in a short period of time. These ghouls are also known as "devourers."

Physical characteristics of Ghoul; 1

— Ghouls have high physical abilities, which makes them much stronger than an ordinary person: having struck with sufficient force, they are able to throw a person into the air or pierce his body through and through. In addition, the height of their jumps can reach several meters. Under normal conditions, ghouls have a high regenerative capacity. Minor wounds and fractures heal in a matter of hours; more serious wounds heal within a few days if the ghoul has a sufficient supply of food.

In addition, the body of a ghoul is stronger than most of the strongest materials. For example, if you try to stab a ghoul with a regular knife, only the metal blade will be damaged. It is not so easy to damage a ghoul's body, and only the sharpest and strongest tools are suitable for this. Also, the body of ghouls can be damaged by applying enough force (for example, the beams that fell on Rize Kamishiro crushed her with their weight).

Ghouls have more developed senses than humans, and these abilities can vary greatly between individuals, several times over. They are able to smell a person or meat from afar, and can also distinguish between humans and ghouls by smell. In addition, hearing helps some ghouls to hear individual steps at a great distance and thus learn how many people are moving and where.

In rare cases, individual representatives stand out even against the background of their relatives. Their sensory abilities go far beyond the average statistical indicators and can cover large areas: from a district to several blocks. This also allows them to collect information about the listening area: to determine the body mass by the sound of footsteps, to identify its clothing by timbre, to assess the situation by reflection and vibrations of sound waves, and to learn the nature of the creature by heartbeat.

Physical characteristics of Ghoul; 2

— Particularly talented ghouls are able to choose a vector for searching for a target when they are faced with the task of calculating one specific target, and to analyze and collect data even from audio recordings, listening to them all at once.

Ghouls with such skills are highly prized among their kindred organizations, as they provide them with a significant strategic advantage during large-scale operations and battles by acting as coordinators (such as Kaya Irimi or Hinami Fueguchi).

In terms of the rate of physical growth and development, ghouls are identical to humans, which allows them to blend into human society.

Biology of Ghouls

— The concentration of Rc cells in the bodies of ghouls is 10 times higher than in humans. On average, a human's RC level is around 200-500, while for ghouls this parameter fluctuates between 1000 and 8000.

They possess a special organ called a kakuhou, which stores Rc cells and then pierces the skin and is released, taking the form of a kagune. The kagune is a rigid, muscle-like hunting organ. Depending on the type of Rc cells, the kagune can take the form of a pair of wings, tentacles, a tail, or tools resembling a blade, drill, or auger. Additionally, a ghoul practicing cannibalism can develop an abnormal kagune, which takes the form of armor covering the body.

Another distinguishing feature of ghouls is the kakugan, which looks like a red pupil surrounded by black sclera. The kakugan can manifest at the ghoul's will, during starvation, or when using a kagune. Although ghouls prefer human flesh, there are quite a few cases where they devour each other. Ghoul meat is considered tough and disgusting to taste, but it is a complete alternative source of nutrition, which also increases the concentration of Rc cells and leads to a mutation that strengthens the kagune.

In addition to the strengthened kagune, cannibal ghouls gain armor covering their bodies, turning them into kakuja.

Although ghouls are immune to damage from normal human materials, their bodies are still vulnerable to damage to the mucous membrane. For example, nostrils, ears, or lips can be easily pierced, as evidenced by Uta's piercing.

At this point, nothing is known about the origins of ghouls. There are no sources that reliably indicate how ghouls developed and where they came from.

Weaknesses of Ghouls

  • Ghouls can be killed by injecting them with Rc-depressants or forcing them to eat normal human food, which will weaken their physical condition and allow them to be damaged by normal objects such as guns, knives, or swords.

It is also mentioned that a ghoul can be killed by decapitation, but what instrument other than another ghoul's quinque or kagune can be used to decapitate it is not specified.

Ghoul Lifestyle

— Ghouls can live either as isolated hermits, hidden from the public eye, or as ordinary people. Living among humans is like a "tightrope walk" due to their biology and social skills. If they become active in hunting or fall under suspicion by the CCG, investigators have every right to kill them upon encounter.

Hunting ghouls are recognized and identified as fugitives. Since a ghoul does not require much money due to the nature of its body and its diet of human flesh, they can live practically without money, like vagrants, but such a life is usually extremely uncomfortable, as for a normal person. However, if a ghoul gets a job and builds a career, the salary can be spent on other needs, since there is no need to spend money on food.

In order to fool others and appear to be normal people, they may pretend to eat normal human food. However, they will then make themselves vomit, otherwise the resulting human food intake will weaken the body.

Since ghouls are only able to eat human flesh, they are extremely strict about the territorial distribution of "hunting grounds" where they can hunt without unnecessary warnings. Eating a person depends only on the ghoul: some prefer to be scavengers, feeding on the bodies of people who have already died (from natural causes). Other ghouls deliberately hunt people like predatory animals, believing that by eating "low" people, the lives of others become better. Although there are also such individuals who are ready to devour everyone indiscriminately.

Ghouls, mired in excess food, after eating many humans develop a superficial view of the value of life, viewing the human species as cattle raised for later consumption.

All about CCG

— The Ghoul Countermeasures Bureau (CCG, abbreviated as "Commission of Counter Ghoul"; Japanese: 喰種対策局, Ghoul Countermeasures Bureau), formerly known as the Counter Ghoul Institution, is a federal agency founded by Daikichi Washuu and tasked with investigating ghoul-related crimes. The CCG's legal basis for prosecution is the Counter-Ghoul Law. Its headquarters are located in the 1st ward.

Ghouls generally refer to investigators as Doves due to the CCG's distinctive emblem.

For a long time, Tsuneyoshi Washu was the chairman of the CCG, but now it is Kichimura Washu.

Districts; 1

— This contains all the information regarding the Tokyo districts of the Tokyo Ghoul universe: There are 24 districts in total.

Districts; 24th district

— The 24th district is the conventional name for the tunnels and underground structures that run under the entire city and are used by ghouls for communications and disposal of bodies.

It is also home to the most dangerous ghouls, which is why the 24th ward is considered the most dangerous sector of Tokyo, both for ordinary people and for investigators. All members of Aogiri Tree come from the underground tunnels of the 24th ward, which is also where the organization was founded by the One-Eyed King. The 24th ward later becomes a haven for the Goat and ghouls fleeing the mass purge of Tokyo organized by CCG Director Kichimura Washuu.

Places: • Anteiku (one of the secret passages) • V14 • F124

Districts; 20th district

— Nerima 20th district in Tokyo. Like other areas of the city, the local quarters are divided by the ghouls into their hunting grounds. Compared to other ghoul-controlled areas, there is relative peace here. Since the rate of ghoul attack incidents in this area is relatively low, the CCG headquarters basically ignores the twentieth district. Amon Kotaro believes that the investigators at headquarters are underestimating the ghouls here.

Places: • Anteiku • Kami University • Restaurant Tolstushka • Kiyomi High School • Library of the 20th district • Kano General Hospital • CCG 20th District Office

Districts; District 13

— Shibuya is the 13th ward in Tokyo. It is known as one of the most dangerous areas of Tokyo, even for ghouls themselves. Such dangerous ghouls as "Jason" and "Lantern" lived there. Later, the locals were terrorized by the "Skull Gang". The spin-off Tokyo Ghoul: Jack takes place here. The one-shot Gaiden Joker also takes place in this area.

At the moment, District 13 is completely cleared of ghouls.

Places: • Seishin High School • Salon • Hospital in the 13th district • Construction site of the 13th district (gathering place of strong ghouls) • District 13 CCG Branch.

Districts; 1 district

— The 1st ward resembles the special ward of Tokyo Chiyoda. The main ward of Tokyo, all the main CCG facilities are located here.

The area is considered uninhabitable for ghouls. It is home to the CCG Academy, where future ghoul investigators are trained, and a laboratory where the most advanced research into ghoul weapons is conducted, and where new quinques are created from their kagune.

Places: • CCG Head Office • CCG Academy • CCG Laboratory Department

Districts: 11th district

— The 11th ward of Ota in Tokyo. The largest ward in Tokyo.

There are no distinctive places.

Districts; 23rd district

— Edogawa is the 23rd ward of Tokyo. It is primarily known for the Ghoul Detention Center located here. The Aogiri Tree was deliberately provoked and created a dangerous situation in the 11th ward in order to distract the CCG and replenish their ranks with ghouls released from Kokuria.

Places: • Ghoul Detention Center

One-Eyed Ghouls, or Half-Blood Ghouls

— One-Eyed Ghoul (隻眼の喰種, Sekigan no Gūru) is a human-ghoul hybrid that possesses the physiology of a ghoul. Most ghouls are either completely unaware of them or believe their existence to be an urban legend.

One-Eyed Ghouls, or Half-Breed Ghouls; Characteristics

— Hybrids are called "one-eyed ghouls" due to the presence of a one-sided kakugan, which distinguishes them from normal ghouls who have a kakugan in both eyes.

During the course of the story, it is noted that some individuals possess a mixed scent of human and ghoul, distinguishing them from purebred members of the species and making the possessors more "tempting" to certain ghouls. For example, Ken Kaneki possessed a scent that certain individuals could not distinguish from normal, while the scent was virtually indistinguishable from human.

It is currently unknown whether all hybrids have this ability or not. Their blood and flesh are also considered somewhat tasty, making one-eyed ghouls potential victims of cannibalism. According to Dr. Shiba, the more injuries and damage a half-ghoul or quinx receives, the more their base abilities will increase due to the spread of Rc channels throughout the individual's body.

Rumors claim that the one-eyed ghouls themselves are much stronger than normal ghouls due to their hybrid physiology, even without any targeted development. All specimens (except Furuta and Nashiro) have shown significant growth in their abilities, and even evolved to develop a (semi-)kakuja form in a short time.

Their bodies are physically identical to those of normal ghouls, possessing the same qualities of resistance to damage and the ability to use a kagune. They are also capable of drinking water and coffee, as well as feeding on human/ghoul flesh; Yoshimura has been seen eating normal human food; whether or not she suffered any negative effects or was rejected by the body is unknown. One-eyed ghouls tend to be cannibalistic, preferring to feed on other ghouls.

There are two ways of creating such a hybrid: natural (by mating a ghoul man (or woman) and a human woman (or man)) and artificial (surgical, which involves transplanting a ghoul's kakuhu into a human body).

One-Eyed Ghouls, or Half-Breed Ghouls; Pregnancy

— Hybrids born naturally are extremely rare. According to Itori, the chances of conception are low, and the fetus usually dies during pregnancy.

• If the mother is a human, the child does not receive the substances necessary for survival and dies of hunger; in order to feed the embryo, the woman must resort to cannibalism, feeding on human flesh. • Even if the mother decides to become a cannibal, the chance of a one-eyed ghoul being born remains extremely low. As a rule, in such cases the child is born half-human. • If the mother is a ghoul, her body may mistake the fetus for food and digest it. The risk of this increases if the mother uses a kagune.

Antaeus

— Anteiku (あんていく) is a small coffee shop in the 20th ward. At the same time, Anteiku is a peaceful organization of ghouls that feed exclusively on suicides or accident victims. The coffee shop provides necessary assistance to those ghouls who are unable to get food for themselves.

In addition to the first and second floors, the building has a hidden basement where frozen human meat is stored. There is also a hidden passage to the 24th district.

Due to Anteiku's influence, the 20th ward is considered the most law-abiding of the others, and is therefore ignored by the CCG.

By unspoken agreement, the ghouls refrain from hunting humans who visit the cafe.
