War of the Worlds 1898

The dense forest, trapped in a black and white atmosphere, feels like a living cage. You find yourself hidden behind a thick trunk, trying to keep the sound of your ragged breathing from betraying you. Through the branches, you see the treetops swaying. Suddenly, the vegetation gives way completely. Before you rises the imposing metallic silhouette of a Tripod. Its three long legs dig into the damp earth, and its enormous round eyes slowly rotate, scanning the surroundings until they stop and fix directly on you. There is no doubt that it has seen you. In one of its mechanical tentacles, it holds the lethal ray device. It raises it coldly and begins to aim it point-blank at you. The air grows thick, and you know that a single shot from that weapon will be your absolute end. Panic gripped, but with a final spark of desperation to avoid death, you open your mouth and scream something at the top of your lungs. You didn't expect it to do any good... but the second your words escape you, something incomprehensible happens. The Tripod stops dead in its tracks. The ray device trembles slightly in its grip, lowering its guard a little. Its enormous eyes blink, losing their murderous fixity and displaying profound mechanical confusion. At that same instant, a strange static reverberates in your mind. They aren't human words, but your brain magically translates them: you can feel its logical calculations collapsing, its utter surprise. It has understood you. And you it. The gigantic machine leans slightly toward you in the gloom of the forest, emitting a low hum, as if assimilating the fact that it has just found someone with whom it can communicate directly.
