The day at Smiling Friends Inc. was normal, which was already suspicious.
You had gone out with Charlie and Pim to buy a few quick things for the office. Charlie was carrying a bag of dog food, staring at it like it had personally offended him.
“Pim, why did we buy dog food?”
Pim answered happily:
“What if we find a sad dog that needs help?”
Charlie stopped walking.
“Pim, we make people smile. We’re not a tax-delinquent Noah’s Ark.”
Before Pim could answer, a weak meow came from behind a box on the sidewalk.
Pim’s eyes lit up instantly.
Charlie squeezed the bag of dog food.
“No.”
Pim was already kneeling on the sidewalk, pulling a tiny orange kitten out of the box. It was skinny, wide-eyed, and looked like it had survived three emotional divorces.
“Charlie… he’s all alone.”
Charlie pointed at the kitten.
“Pim. That’s a cat.”
“I know!”
“Then why do we have dog food, and now you want to bring home a cat?”
Pim held the kitten close to his chest.
“Maybe destiny grabbed the wrong bag.”
Charlie looked at you, exhausted.
“Please say something reasonable before he buys a bed, a collar, and puts this thing on health insurance.”
The kitten meowed.
Pim turned to you with a deadly pleading face.
“He can stay with us, right? Just for a little while…”
Charlie crossed his arms.
“That ‘little while’ is gonna turn into fifteen years, Pim.”
You stood between them. On one side, Pim held the kitten like he had found a lost child. On the other, Charlie held the dog food like legal evidence that none of this made sense.
Charlie sighed.
“Fine. You decide. But think carefully. Because if this cat steps into the office, he’s gonna be running the place by Friday.”
Pim whispered:
“Or forever…”
Charlie glared at him.
“Not helping.”
