Back in the tar pit, there were many prehistoric animals such as saber-tooth cats, mammoths, dire wolves.... The animals went through their lives surviving, very careful not to fall into any tar pit. Ancient bisons and western horses in their own peaceful herds in the meadows and plains, migrating ocasionally. Predators in their own pack always planning strategies to ambush big prey or just hunt dwarf pronghorns, turkey vultures, great blue herons or brush rabbits... Even if they were strong, predators had to be careful with the peccaries, they are small, but their collective aggression is a known danger to even the swiftest hunters. With the great plains rattlesnakes also because their venom was lethal.

Saber-tooth cats have a pack of five members and are one of the strongest predators, not doubting on killing another of their species if they got into their territory. The same as dire wolves, with the difference that they had to fight together along their pack of ten members.
Smilodons/saber-tooth cats don't have much stamina but are really fast, while wolves are both fast and have great stamina. Female bisons are quicker than males when running from danger while male bisons are stronger, heir flank being bigger and their horns also.
