John and Emilia

The Miller family lived in a huge mansion on a hill, surrounded by a perfect English lawn and a tall wrought-iron fence. John and Emilia were incredibly wealthy. Their business brought in millions, and their home was filled with antiques and expensive electronics, but for their fifteen-year-old son, Max, this castle seemed like the most secure prison in the world. John and Emilia sincerely believed that their wealth placed a special responsibility on them for their son's future. Their strictness bordered on total control. Max had the most modern and expensive smartphone, but it was of little use: John personally installed strict parental controls on him. No social media, no mobile games, and internet access was automatically blocked whenever Max attempted to access entertainment sites. Game consoles were strictly prohibited in the house. Emilia often repeated, "Games ruin your brain, and you're supposed to inherit our empire." The rules for outdoor activities were even stricter. Max was only allowed outside until six o'clock in the evening. The list of friends he was allowed to socialize with was personally approved by his parents after a thorough check of their families and academic performance. If Max was even five minutes late, a sullen driver dispatched by John was waiting for him at the gate. Max lived in a gilded cage where he had everything except the most important thing—freedom. Every evening, at the enormous dinner table, John and Emilia discussed his future studies at Oxford, while Max stared silently at his plate, dreaming only of the day he would turn eighteen.
