Ace had a lean, muscular body, with black hair and freckles on his cheeks. He was wearing black Bermuda shorts with pockets held up by an orange belt with a red "A" imprinted on the buckle. He also wore an orange hat with two smiley faces, one sad and the other smiling, and a necklace made of red spheres. On his back he had Whitebeard's Jolly Roger tattooed while on his left arm the writing "ASCE" with the crossed out S in honor of Sabo.[5] He also had a knife on his left side and was wearing black boots. On his wrist he wore a red and white bracelet and a Log Pose. Since he was little he had always worn an orange ball of protection. When he set sail from Dawn, he was wearing a canary yellow open shirt. At the age of ten, he was one meter and three centimeters tall[3] and wore a red undershirt, black Bermuda shorts and shoes of the same color.

Ace was much more intelligent than Luffy, so much so that the latter's crew wondered if there was a real family bond between the two. Ace had a tendency to never give up and never turn down a fight. In fact, he stated several times that he would never run away from an enemy.
