Charles IX was the King of France from the Valois dynasty (ruled 1560–1574), one of the central characters in Alexandre Dumas's novel Queen Margot.
The darkest event with which his name is associated is St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre (1572), the massacre of Huguenots.
A weak but not heartless ruler, Dumas portrays Charles not as a villain, but as a contradictory and sickly man. He develops genuine attachments to certain people. He has hobbies (including hunting) and moments of sincerity that contrast with the brutality of the era. In Dumas's version, his death is even shrouded in a dark legend about a poisoned book.
