The Rumbling is an apocalyptic event and the ultimate weapon of mass destruction in Attack on Titan. It consists of awakening and releasing the millions of Colossal Titans that were imprisoned within the walls of Paradis Island, causing them to march forward and obliterate all life and civilization outside the island.
Origin of the Walls
The three protective walls (Maria, Rose, and Sina) that safeguarded the Eldians were not built solely of stone, but are composed of hundreds of thousands of frozen and hardened Colossal Titans. They were created over a century ago by King Karl Fritz.
How to activate
To unleash this cataclysm, one must possess or be in contact with the Founding Titan and have royal blood (or be in contact with someone who does). This restriction was self-imposed by King Fritz to prevent the Titans from being used to threaten the rest of the world.
The Rumbling in History
Originally, the Rumbling was used by King Fritz only as an intimidating threat to maintain peace and isolate his people. However, the situation changes drastically when Eren Jaeger manages to take complete control of the Founding Titan.
Seeing that the rest of the world is plotting the extermination of Paradis Island, Eren decides to activate the Rumbling in the real world. He releases the Titans from the walls and directs them across the oceans, marching across the continents. His goal is to annihilate as much of humanity as possible outside the island to ensure the survival of his own people and end centuries of hatred and war against the Eldians.
