And the funniest thing is, no one even noticed the difference. Except me. But I only noticed because I'd been watching this tragedy from the very beginning.

Shiraishi Shion displays many different qualities, but there are some that stand out in particular.

Shiraishi-kun has a sweet tooth. Although... to be honest, he loves any food that smells good. But above all else, his love for ice cream stands out. Especially if it's popsicles. He also loves studying and sports. He's in a sports club. In his free time, he plays video games, reads manga, and watches movies. He especially enjoys melodramas. He always reacts strongly to films. He can even cry if there's a sad scene. He's more of a cat person by nature. He adores cats, but cats aren't so fond of him. They're always hissing at him as if he's seen a ghost.

If you look closely, you'll notice that Shion often seems to be lost in the clouds. He might be lost in the forest, the mountains, or in empty places. On his way home, he listens to the sounds, as if he's trying to hear something no one else can hear. It seems strange, but in its own way, it's endearing to others. Many call Shirashi-kun a considerate and responsible person!

Although, there are things that many still find confusing. Shion smiles often. This isn't a bad thing, but sometimes... He can behave completely inappropriately in certain situations. He'll think for a long time before reacting to bad news, and then might react completely inappropriately. This makes him seem somehow... alien. He remembers names and people very well, and notices details.

Shiraishi Shion comes across as an open and friendly person who fits in easily with others. He quickly engages in conversation, doesn't create distance, and knows how to listen and respond in a way that makes people feel comfortable. This isn't a forced charisma, but a calm, natural presence, as if he sees no reason to resist interaction.

At the same time, he has a strange "blurred personality." He doesn't talk about himself directly, avoiding specifics, as if his past is either unimportant or deliberately hidden. He doesn't lie; rather, he diverts the conversation. This creates the feeling that he doesn't have a clearly defined identity in the traditional sense.

Inwardly, he seems like an observer. He doesn't simply live in the village, but rather studies it: the people, the rhythm of life, the habits, even the silence between words.

Kumano is a quiet mountain region in the south of the Kii Peninsula, where small villages are hidden among dense cedar forests and green slopes. Here, life flows slowly and steadily, virtually unchanged for decades. Narrow roads wind between rice fields, old wooden houses, and small rivers, and beyond the last buildings, the forest begins immediately. Ancient, damp, and seemingly endless.

Summer in Kumano is hot and very humid. The rainy season begins in June: heavy clouds gather over the mountains, mists shroud the valleys, and the air is permeated with the scent of wet earth and pine needles. After the rainy season ends, a stifling heat sets in. The chirping of cicadas echoes throughout the village all day, and the scorching air trembles over the fields and roads. The evenings cool slightly, and residents take to the streets to escape the heat.

Villages have small populations, so almost everyone knows each other. Any event quickly becomes a topic of discussion, and the appearance of a stranger rarely goes unnoticed. The center usually contains a few shops, a bus stop, and a small school attended by children from neighboring settlements. After school, students return home on foot or by bike, following roads that lead into the forests and mountains.

A special place is occupied by an old Shinto shrine, hidden among the trees. A mossy stone staircase leads up to it, and many local legends circulate around it. Despite the tranquility and beauty of these places, the presence of something ancient and incomprehensible always lingers in Kumano. Here, nature seems much older than man, and the silence of the forests holds secrets that the locals prefer to speak of only in whispers.

It all started when a new student transferred to Kumano High School.

He appeared almost unnoticed on an ordinary summer day, when a heavy, humid heat already hung over the village and the air trembled with the chirping of cicadas. But as soon as he entered the classroom, attention naturally shifted to him. He made no attempt to stand out and maintained a calm, even slightly aloof demeanor, but there was something about him that made you look again.

His white hair, too light for the area, blue eyes, and pale skin made him look like a foreigner. After class, his classmates immediately surrounded him with questions and curiosity. He didn't pull away, answering easily and with a smile, but when asked directly about his past, he simply deflected, saying he was "not from Japan" without further elaboration.

He quickly became a part of school life. As if he'd always been there. People talked to him easily, accepted him without question, and after just a few days, it seemed strange that he hadn't been there before. And yet, there remained a strange feeling, barely perceptible, like a shadow at the edge of vision. He was there, laughing with everyone, walking the same corridors, but sometimes it felt like he didn't quite belong here. Or maybe it was just me.

We really did become friends quickly, though. We started walking to school together and walking home afterward. Our houses were close to each other, and it soon became a habit. Walking side by side along the narrow road past rice fields and quiet houses, where warm lights were already glowing in the windows.

He spoke of simple things easily, but sometimes asked strange questions about the village, as if he were seeing it for the first time. Sometimes he'd stop and stare long and hard into the forest beyond Kumano, as if listening to something I couldn't hear. Then he'd smile again and move on, as if nothing had happened.

And with each passing day it became clearer: he truly had become a part of Kumano… but at the same time, he had never become a part of it completely.
