L sends FBI agents to secretly investigate people connected to the case
One of them is Raye Penber
Light discovers this
Using the Death Note, Light manipulates Raye into revealing the names of all the FBI agents
Light then kills all of them
This removes a huge obstacle
However, one person starts investigating:
Naomi Misora, Raye Penber's fiancée.
She is intelligent and begins getting dangerously close to the truth
Light meets her by chance
Using manipulation and lies, he tricks her into revealing her real name
Then he writes it in the Death Note
She disappears and dies
This is one of Light's coldest actions in the series
Misa Amane
Meanwhile, another Death Note appears.
A famous model and actress named Misa Amane receives it
Unlike Light, Misa is already a huge fan of Kira
Because Kira killed the criminal who murdered her parents
She sees Kira as her hero
The Shinigami Eyes
Misa makes a deal with her Shinigami, Rem
The deal cuts her lifespan in half
In exchange, she gains Shinigami Eyes
These eyes allow her to see:
A person's real name
Their remaining lifespan
Just by looking at them
This means Misa can learn identities instantly
How Misa Finds Light
Misa becomes determined to find Kira
Because she has the Shinigami Eyes, she can identify people easily
Through clues and investigation, she eventually discovers that Light is Kira
She approaches him directly
Instead of exposing him, she tells him:
"I'm the second Kira."
Light is shocked
Now he knows there is another Death Note user
Light's Reaction
At first Light sees Misa as a problem
She's reckless
Emotional
Far less careful than him
She could expose both of them
But Misa is completely obsessed with Light
She promises to help him
Light decides to use her instead
He pretends to care about her because she is useful
Especially because of her Shinigami Eyes
L Becomes Suspicious
L notices strange activity
He realizes there may be a Second Kira
Unlike the original Kira

The Beginning
A genius high school student named Light Yagami finds a mysterious notebook called the Death Note.
The notebook belongs to a Shinigami (death god) named Ryuk.
The Death Note has one main rule:
If you write a person's name while imagining their face, that person dies.
If no cause of death is written, the victim dies of a heart attack.
At first Light tests it and realizes it's real.
Instead of throwing it away, he decides to use it.
Light Becomes Kira
Light starts killing criminals around the world.
His goal is to create a world without crime and become the "god" of that new world.
As criminals begin dying from heart attacks everywhere, people notice a pattern.
The public gives the mysterious killer a nickname:
Kira.
Some people fear Kira.
Some people worship him.
L Appears
The world's greatest detective, known only as L, takes the case.
Nobody knows his real name, face, or identity.
L quickly realizes:
Kira can kill from a distance.
Kira needs information about his victims.
Kira is probably in Japan.
To test Kira, L broadcasts a fake criminal on TV.
The criminal claims to be L.
Light kills him immediately.
But the broadcast was only shown in one region of Japan.
This lets L narrow Kira's location down dramatically.
Light realizes he has made a mistake.
From then on, a battle of intelligence begins

Light vs L
Both are geniuses.
Light tries to kill L.
L tries to prove Light is Kira.
Neither has enough evidence.
They constantly try to outsmart each other.
L eventually becomes suspicious of Light specifically.
Instead of arresting him, L gets close to him.
He even introduces himself to Light in person.
This shocks Light because now he knows what L looks like—but he still doesn't know L's real name.
Without the real name, the Death Note cannot kill him.

Main Characters
Light Yagami
The main protagonist. A genius student who finds the Death Note and becomes the original Kira. He wants to create a new world by killing criminals.
L (Ryuzaki)

The world's greatest detective and Kira's biggest opponent. Extremely intelligent, eccentric, and suspicious of Light from early on.
Misa Amane
A famous model and actress who becomes the Second Kira. She is devoted to Kira and eventually falls in love with Light.
Ryuk
The Shinigami who dropped the Death Note into the human world out of boredom. He accompanies Light and watches events unfold for entertainment.
Rem
Misa's Shinigami. Unlike Ryuk, she genuinely cares about Misa and wants to protect her.
The Yagami Family
Soichiro Yagami
Light's father. A respected police chief and leader of the Japanese Kira investigation team. He strongly believes in justice and has no idea his son is Kira.
Sachiko Yagami
Light's mother. She has little involvement in the investigation and is unaware of Light's secret.
Sayu Yagami
Light's younger sister. She is kind and innocent and knows nothing about Kira.
The Japanese Task Force
Touta Matsuda
The youngest member of the task force. Energetic, emotional, and sometimes reckless, but loyal and good-hearted.
Shuichi Aizawa
A serious and practical investigator. Often one of the most skeptical members of the team.
Kanzo Mogi
A quiet but dependable investigator. He speaks little but is highly trusted.
Hirokazu Ukita
A task force member who actively investigates Kira-related leads.
Watari (Quillsh Wammy)
L's assistant, caretaker, and closest ally. He handles logistics, technology, and communication for L.

Raye Penber
An FBI agent sent to investigate people suspected of being Kira, including Light.
Naomi Misora
A former FBI investigator and Raye Penber's fiancée. She comes dangerously close to discovering Kira's identity.
Other Death Note Use

Death Note Rules
The Death Note is a notebook used by Shinigami (death gods) to kill humans
Basic Rules
Rule 1
The human whose name is written in this note shall die.
Rule 2
The writer must have the person's face in mind when writing the name.
This prevents people with the same name from dying accidentally.
Rule 3
If no cause of death is written within 40 seconds, the person dies of a heart attack.
Rule 4
After writing the cause of death, details of the death can be written within the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
Rule 5
A Death Note user can specify actions before death if they are physically possible.
Rule 6
The notebook cannot make people do impossible things.
For example, you cannot write:
"Dies after flying to the Moon."
Rule 7
Anyone who touches a Death Note can see and hear the Shinigami attached to it.
Rule 8
The owner of a Death Note can see the Shinigami attached to it.
Rule 9
A human who uses the Death Note can neither go to Heaven nor Hell.
(In Death Note, this eventually means everyone goes to the same place after death.)
Rule 10
Ownership of the Death Note can be transferred to another person.
Rule 11
A person who gives up ownership loses all memories related to the Death Note.
Rule 12
If that person touches the notebook again, those memories return.
Rule 13
A human can make the Shinigami Eye Deal.
Rule 14
The Eye Deal cuts the person's remaining lifespan in half.
Rule 15
In exchange, the person can see the real names and remaining lifespans of other humans.
Rule 16
Shinigami cannot tell humans when they will die.
Rule 17
A Death Note can be hidden, buried, passed around, or used by multiple people.
Rule 18
More than one Death Note can exist in the human world at the same time.
This is why Light and Misa can both be Kira.
