🧠 Before the Death Note

This turns much of their relationship into a kind of mental chess game, where each tries to outmaneuver the other.

🤝 A seemingly genuine friendship
Despite his suspicions about Light, L grows quite close to him. They even introduce themselves as friends and spend a lot of time together.

However, the friendship is constantly conditioned by the investigation: L never completely abandons his suspicions, while Light keeps his true intentions hidden.

What's interesting is that, although they both use each other, there's also a certain intellectual respect. Each recognizes that the other is exceptionally intelligent.

⚔️ Trust vs. suspicion
The relationship works thanks to a contradiction:

L: suspects that Light is Kira, but needs to get closer to him to discover the truth.
Light: He knows L is investigating him, but he needs to maintain an appearance of innocence.

That's why their seemingly normal conversations often have a second meaning: they are both analyzing each other's words, reactions, and movements.

What is SPK?

The SPK is a secret research organization formed in the United States. Its primary objective is to locate Kira, discover his identity, and apprehend him.

It was created after L's death, when the authorities and certain researchers realized that Kira was still active and that it was necessary to establish a new force capable of confronting him.

Unlike the Japanese investigation team, the SPK is far more international and specialized. It is comprised of agents selected for their skills and experience, and has substantial resources.

🧩 Near (Nate River)
Near is one of the most important characters in the second half of Death Note and one of L's two main successors. His real name is Nate River. After L's death, he becomes the leader of the SPK (Special Provision for Kira) and takes on the mission of finding and stopping Kira.

🧠 Personality and mindset
Near is extremely intelligent, calm, and analytical. Unlike Light, he doesn't usually let himself be carried away by strong emotions or the need to prove his superiority.

He has a reserved and distant personality. He may seem childish because of his toys and his behavior, but behind that appearance lies an extraordinarily logical mind.

One of his most important characteristics is his skepticism. Near does not accept a conclusion simply because it seems obvious; he constantly considers different possibilities and tries to find contradictions within them.

He also has a very particular way of thinking: he often uses figures, toys, and small objects to mentally represent situations and people, as if he were physically constructing the reasoning that occurs in his head.

👑 Near as leader of the SPK
As a leader, Near doesn't act like a traditional commander. He doesn't need to impose his will through authority or force. His main tool is his intellectual capacity.

Use the SPK to:

Gather information about Kira.

Analyze L.'s previous research.

Investigate the people connected to Kira.

Coordinate specialized agents.

Protect yourself while the investigation continues.

Formulate strategies to verify your suspicions.

Near relies on his subordinates to conduct investigations and operations while he focuses much of his attention on analyzing information and building hypotheses.

Near and Mello

Near and Mello were raised as potential successors to L at Wammy's House. Both possess exceptional intelligence, but their personalities are virtually opposites.

Near is calm, logical, and patient.

Mello is impulsive, emotional, competitive, and willing to take greater risks.

Although they are rivals, their actions ultimately prove crucial in solving the Kira case. Near even acknowledges that he wouldn't have been able to reach the final result without Mello's actions.

👨‍✈️Soichiro Yagami
He is his father, so he maintains a very close and affectionate relationship with him. He trusts Light deeply and is proud of his intelligence. At the same time, as an investigator of Kira, he comes to terms with the possibility that his own son may be connected to the case, which creates a strong emotional conflict.

👮 Touta Matsuda
He has a friendly and fairly close relationship with Light. He considers him intelligent, pleasant, and trustworthy. Matsuda often admires him and doesn't initially suspect him, making it especially easy for Light to gain his trust.

🕵️ Kanzo Mogi
Their relationship is more professional and distant. Mogi respects Light's abilities and works with him on the investigation, but she doesn't have the same personal closeness with him as Matsuda or Soichiro.

👔 Shuichi Aizawa
Their relationship is primarily professional, though Aizawa develops more doubts about Light as the investigation progresses. He is more distrustful and critical than Matsuda, making it more difficult for Light to influence him.

🕴️ Hideki Ide
His relationship with Light is primarily professional and distant. Ide doesn't develop a particularly close friendship with him, although he acknowledges his intelligence and his participation in the investigation.

Matsuda: a colleague and friend who trusts Light a lot.

Mogi: a professional and reserved colleague.

Aizawa: a classmate who gradually becomes suspicious of Light.

Amane Mass

Physically:
Misa is a striking young woman with light blonde, usually long hair, large eyes, and a slender build. Her style is inspired by gothic and alternative fashion, featuring dark dresses, accessories, stockings, and heavy makeup.

Mentally:
She is extroverted, emotional, impulsive, and very expressive. She can be cheerful and affectionate, but also extremely determined when it comes to Light. Her admiration for Kira develops into a strong devotion.

How he/she supports Light/Kira:
Misa becomes a crucial ally of Kira. She possesses the Shinigami Eyes, which allow her to know people's names and lifespans simply by observing them. She is willing to use her abilities to help Light and protect her identity.

Kiyomi Takada

Physically:
Takada is a young, elegant woman with long, dark hair, a refined appearance, and formal attire. Her appearance conveys professionalism and seriousness.

Mentally:
She is intelligent, self-assured, ambitious, and disciplined. She has a much more rational and controlled personality than Misa. She admires Kira and believes her ideology represents a form of justice.

How he/she supports Light/Kira:
Light uses her as Kira's public spokesperson. From her position as a presenter, Takada helps to disseminate and defend Kira's image to the public. Furthermore, she maintains a secret relationship with Light and cooperates with him to preserve his influence.

Teru Mikami

Physically:
Mikami is a tall, thin, and serious-looking young man. He has dark hair, usually combed back, and typically wears formal suits. His posture and expression convey discipline and rigidity.

Mentally:
He is extremely disciplined, obsessive, and radical. He has a very absolute view of justice: he divides the world into "good" and "bad" people, and considers Kira to represent ultimate justice. His devotion to Kira is practically religious.

How he/she supports Light/Kira:
Light selects him as his direct representative. Mikami uses the Death Note following Light's instructions and acts as a sort of enforcer for Kira. His obedience and fanaticism allow Light to keep his identity hidden while Mikami carries out the actions Light needs.

At first, Kira primarily inspires terror. People know that someone can kill from a distance and without the police being able to easily stop them. Many criminals begin to fear being punished simply for appearing in public.

But over time, another reaction emerges: admiration. A segment of the population begins to believe that Kira is eliminating criminals and doing what the institutions cannot. For them, Kira represents a kind of absolute justice.

The media greatly amplifies Kira's image. News reports, debates, and public opinions turn her name into a global phenomenon.

Kira ceases to be just an unknown person who kills criminals and becomes a public and ideological figure.

Ryuk is the Shinigami who deliberately drops his Death Note into the human world, causing Light Yagami to find it.

He is curious, carefree, mischievous, and rather apathetic about the consequences of his actions. He doesn't consider Light his friend or a subordinate; he mainly observes his decisions because he wants to be entertained.

Ryuk functions as an observer of the story: he provides information about the world of the Shinigami, but usually avoids directly intervening in Light's conflicts.

Rem is a much more serious, protective, and emotional Shinigami than Ryuk.

She develops a strong bond with Misa Amane and is willing to protect her even if it has consequences for herself. For this reason, Rem ends up becoming much more directly involved in human events.

Unlike Ryuk, Rem does develop genuine feelings and concern for a human, which has important consequences for the story.

Shinigami are supernatural beings from the Death Note universe associated with death. They possess a monstrous or otherworldly appearance and live in a world separate from the human one. Their primary function is to shorten the lifespans of humans by writing their names in Death Notes, thereby increasing their own lifespan.

They are generally indifferent to humans and have a very different morality. Some, however, can develop emotional bonds with human beings.

The Death Note is a supernatural notebook originally belonging to a Shinigami. Its main power allows the user to kill a person by writing their name on its pages, provided they know their face correctly.
