The Task Force (タスクフォース, Tasukufōsu), later called the Japanese Task Force, is the main organization searching for Kira.

Greeting

Overview The Task Force is created by Ryuzaki after he deduces that Kira is in Japan and is the only organization in the country searching for Kira. The organization's existence is not disclosed, and the names and personal information of all members are kept secret. After Ryuzaki's death, Light Yagami assumes leadership of the organization and begins operating under the name L.

Initially, the NPA assigns many members to the Kira case. As it becomes clear that anyone searching for Kira will be in great danger, almost all agents choose to withdraw. The small group that remains is asked to meet with L in person.

In the early days, the Task Force meets in various hotels, arriving at staggered times, until the tower built by L is completed. During this period, L installs listening devices in the homes of two police families; detains Misa Amane, Light, and Soichiro Yagami; and enlists the support of a con man and a thief; all of these actions cause tension between L and the police officers. When the NPA withdraws its police support from the Task Force, the members are forced to choose between searching for Kira or keeping their jobs. Shuichi Aizawa leaves after a disagreement with L, but he and Hideki Ide use police resources to assist the Task Force in arresting Kyosuke Higuchi. The Task Force remains in possession of his Death Note for the next five years.

During the time jump, Light assumes control of the organization and the identity of L. When the NPA director, Kanichi Takimura, and Sayu Yagami are kidnapped, Aizawa and Ide rejoin the team full-time. The Task Force is present during the raid on the mafia base, where Soichiro is fatally wounded. After the team makes contact with Near, Aizawa and Ide again doubt Light's innocence and begin to watch him closely, as does Misa...

Task force members

Yamamoto joins the task force a year after Light's death. He has doubts about the existence of assassination notebooks and shinigami. He is also a drinking buddy of Matsuda. Sanami, appearing only in the live-action films, is the only woman on the investigation team. She cares for Misa during her captivity in the second film. She demonstrates skepticism towards the methods used by the investigation team, frequently calling them cruel. Shoko Himura, appearing only in the live-action TV series, is the only woman on the Task Force, having infiltrated L as an NPA agent. With the goal of obtaining Kira's weapon, she eventually deserts the investigation team to work with Near.

Task force members

Members Name Information L, who uses the pseudonym Ryuzaki throughout the investigation, is the founder and leader of the Task Force. As L, he is considered, within the universe of the work, the greatest detective in the world. His main objective is to bring Kira to justice at any cost. Light Yagami is Kira and joins the Task Force to get closer to Ryuzaki and discover his true name. He becomes a legitimate member for a brief period, when he loses his memory of being Kira while trying to defeat Kyosuke Higuchi. His intelligence is comparable to Ryuzaki's. Soichiro Yagami is the head of the NPA and the father of Light Yagami. Initially, he leads the group of men who become members of the Task Force. Shuichi Aizawa leaves the Task Force after the NPA cuts off funding. He returns before Ryuzaki's death and is one of the first people, after the time skip, to suspect Light Yagami of being Kira. After the Kira case is resolved, Aizawa becomes head of the NPA. Kanzo Mogi is one of the most dedicated members of the Japanese Task Force, but also one of the most reserved. Touta Matsuda is a young and inexperienced, yet dedicated member who wants to solve the case at all costs. He is frequently reprimanded by the other members of the Task Force. Hideki Ide helps coordinate the Task Force's efforts and carries out actions such as organizing a roadblock with police cars. Hirokazu Ukita is the most emotional member of the Task Force. He primarily helps Mogi before being killed by the Second Kira. Watari, in addition to being Ryuzaki's contact, is also responsible for the Task Force's logistics. Aiber Aiber is a con artist hired by Ryuzaki to impersonate Eraldo Coil in order to gain the trust of the Yotsuba Group members. Wedy Wedy is a thief hired by Ryuzaki for her infiltration skills, which are used to install listening devices at the Yotsuba Group headquarters.

She and Kanzo Mogi are detained by the SPK shortly before Near's invitation for the two organizations to meet in person.

All members from both sides are present when the Task Force and the SPK meet at the Yellow Box Warehouse. Teru Mikami writes down the names of everyone present in his Death Note, but Near's plan prevails and Light is unmasked as Kira, ending the investigation into Kira.
