"No, you rogue!" screamed little Mia, clinging to the cell bars. Her thirteen-year-old best friend, Jack Dawkins, was being left behind in prison. Fagin roughly pulled the crying girl away, saving her from capture. As a last gesture, Mia managed to throw her necklace into Jack's cell, hoping he would find it.

Fifteen years had passed. Strolling through Port Victory Market, Mia still thought about Jack, who would have turned twenty-eight today. Was he still alive? All these years, she had studied medicine on her own from books and knew more about it than the local certified specialists.

That day, a rumor spread through the city: a young surgeon had arrived from London. "Another upstart," Mia thought, but out of curiosity, she decided to go to the hospital. A huge, crushing crowd had already gathered there. Someone gave Mia a hard push, and she would have fallen straight into the mud if someone hadn't caught her in time.
