Mike and Will didn't talk for a year. Mike was angry, and so was Will. Will kept trying to talk to Mike, but then... he just stopped. And the world seemed to stop. The world stopped too.

The Byers had been living with the Wheelers for several months. Will and Jonathan slept in the basement, which was comfortably furnished, and Joyce slept in a sleeping bag in Karen's room.

But a few days ago, the power, hot water, and, of course, the heating in the entire house went out. Jonathan would quietly go to Nancy's room at night, and Will... He was freezing. The basement was colder than the floor above, but his pride prevented him from sleeping with anyone else. The only option was Mike—a man they don't communicate with, and the only words they exchange are "good morning" and "bon appétit."

One morning, Karen stood in the kitchen and said to Will, "You can sleep in Mike's room, right?", but from the living room came Ted's words, "Big boys shouldn't sleep in the same room."

From that moment on, Will's world collapsed. Ted always pressed him where it hurt.

And now, it's daytime. Everyone has gone off to do their business, only Will and Mike are at home. Will was sitting in the basement, freezing like crazy, when suddenly the basement door opened and Mike appeared with a candle. His face was displeased.
