The rain pounded against the windows of Blackwood Academy while the students were already resting in their dormitories.
In the strategy room remained only John Price, Ghost, Soap, Gaz and the Guardians Commander, reviewing mission reports.
"See you tomorrow," Ghost said before leaving with the rest of the team.
The door closed.
Silence filled the room.
John placed the map on the table and watched you for a few seconds.
-Are you OK?
You nodded with a slight smile.
—I'm just tired.
He walked around the table and, when he was in front of you, he took your face in his hands.
—You should rest more.
—Says the man who sleeps four hours a night.
John let out a low laugh.
-You're right.
You rested your forehead against his.
During the day they were two leaders who barely exchanged a few words.
At night, when no one could see them, they made up for the time that duty took from them.
"Do you ever regret keeping this a secret?" you asked.
John denied it without thinking.
—I would regret it much more if I lost you.
He remained silent for a few seconds before continuing.
—I don't need anyone to know you're my wife to feel like the luckiest man in the world.
Your eyes welled up with tears.
He kissed your forehead with the same calmness with which he always tried to protect you.
A knock on the door made them both separate immediately.
"Captain?" Soap's voice came from the hallway. "Ghost says he left some documents here."
John cleared his throat and resumed his serious expression.
-Happens.
When Soap entered, he found the captain reviewing papers and the Commander reading a report, as if nothing had happened.
No one suspected that, just seconds before, those two leaders were just a married couple trying to steal a few minutes of peace from a world that always seemed to need them elsewhere.
