Shadows of Black Pines

Winter break was supposed to be a normal vacation for seven students. Instead of the bustling city, they find themselves in an old mansion, lost in the snowy woods near the small town of Black Pines. The house was purchased for a suspiciously low price and seems like the perfect getaway.

But soon the friends notice something watching them from the forest. Missing person flyers are posted everywhere in town, but locals are reluctant to talk about what's going on. When one of the girls disappears without a trace, only to return a few days later looking completely different, it becomes clear: Black Pines holds far more terrible secrets than it seems.

An ancient cult lurks among the snow-covered pines, the townspeople know much more than they're admitting, and each new day brings the friends closer to the terrible truth. To survive, they'll have to figure out who to trust, what's really going on in the forest, and why their arrival wasn't a coincidence.

Black Pines is a small town tucked away among dense pine forests and snow-capped hills. Founded in the late 19th century by loggers and hunters, it later developed into a quiet community where most residents have known each other since childhood. Despite the picturesque landscapes and cozy streets, the town has a strange feel. It's too quiet, especially after dark.

Black Pines is home to approximately two thousand people. At first glance, the locals seem friendly and polite. They smile at visitors, eagerly offer directions, and are always ready to engage in conversation. However, when the subject of the town's past, the surrounding forests, or the disappearances is brought up, the residents quickly change the subject or simply drop the conversation altogether.

Old utility poles, bus stops, and bulletin boards are still hung with yellowed flyers with photos of missing persons. New ones constantly appear nearby.

Officials attribute the incidents to accidents, harsh winters, and the dangers of the forest. However, many have noticed a strange pattern: the number of disappearances has remained suspiciously high for many years, and investigations almost never yield results. In Black Pines, they don't like to talk about it out loud, but every resident knows that some people go into the forest and never return.

The mansion is located on the outskirts of Black Pines, right at the edge of the forest. And if one day you think someone is standing among the trees, looking right at you, it's best to pretend you didn't notice.

The Black Pines mansion was built in 1928 by industrialist Edward Hayes, who dreamed of creating a secluded family estate far from the big cities. The house was built on the edge of a forest, among hills and pine groves. Local residents considered the location unsuitable from the start and tried to avoid it.

After Hayes' death, the mansion changed hands several times. Some owners lived there for only a few months, others left after years, but almost no one stayed for long. Over time, strange rumors began to circulate around the mansion. People reported shadows in the windows of the empty house, strangers among the trees, and strange lights that could be seen at night from the woods.

The last owners disappeared under mysterious circumstances. No official explanation was ever forthcoming. The house lay empty and abandoned for many years. Gradually, its history became shrouded in legend, and locals began to say the mansion was cursed.

A few months ago, the house unexpectedly appeared at a closed auction. Despite its vast size, good condition, and expensive land, the price was suspiciously low. It was then that the mother of one of the students purchased it, deciding to use the mansion as a vacation home.

Among them were tourists, hunters, travelers, residents of neighboring towns, and even natives of Black Pines itself. Some disappeared individually, others entire families.

Flyers with photos of missing persons can be seen all over the city. New posters hang next to old ones, long faded by time and snow. On some lampposts, you can find photos of people who disappeared twenty or even thirty years ago. Some posters have been blown off by the wind, others are covered in mud, but no one is rushing to remove them. It seems as if the city is deliberately preserving the memory of each missing person.

The official versions always look the same. Lost in the woods. Caught in a snowstorm. Left and never returned. An accident. However, many cases raise too many questions. Some people have disappeared literally in the middle of the city. Others were last seen near their own homes. There have been cases where cars, clothing, or personal belongings were found at the scene, only for their owners to vanish without a trace.

The coincidences are particularly odd. Many of the missing people vanished in winter. Some complained of being watched before their disappearance. Others reported strange sounds in the forest or figures standing among the trees. Archives contain stories of people who claimed to have seen someone near their home a few days before their disappearance.

There's another detail that's rarely discussed. In photographs of some missing persons, the same faces can be seen among passersby in the background. These people appear in pictures taken years, even decades, apart. No one knows whether this is a coincidence or not. But those who notice it usually start asking too many questions.

Black Pines is rarely truly peaceful. Even on the most ordinary days, things happen here that are difficult to explain. Some can be dismissed as coincidences, others are thought-provoking, and still others are the beginning of far more serious events.

After snowfalls, strange footprints often appear around the mansion and in the forest. Sometimes they resemble human footprints, sometimes not. Sometimes the trail of footprints begins right in the middle of a clearing or suddenly ends for no apparent reason.

At different times of day, motionless figures can be spotted among the trees. They are usually too far away to discern details. As soon as you turn away or approach, the silhouette disappears. Sometimes, different people notice the same figure in different parts of the forest at the same time.

The mansion and some areas of the city experience periodic power outages. The power outages can last for a few seconds or several hours. After such outages, residents often discover open doors, displaced items, or previously misplaced objects.

Phones sometimes start acting strange. Calls come in without a number, and you hear static, whispers, or heavy breathing. Sometimes the caller remains silent. Sometimes the call lasts only a few seconds and then disappears from the call log.

Personal belongings have a habit of disappearing without explanation. Keys, phones, photographs, documents, and other items can disappear for several days, only to suddenly turn up in the most unexpected places.

The behavior of the city's residents also often raises questions. Some begin conversations overly friendly, as if they've known each other for a long time. It's believed that the first mentions of the cult predate the founding of the town itself. Some believe it was the cult's origins that led to Black Pines's emergence in this location. Others believe the cult is simply a scary legend used to frighten children on long winter evenings.

Very little is known about its structure. Rumor has it that the cult's members live among ordinary people and are no different from other residents. They have no official leader, open meetings, or visible signs of affiliation. This is why no one can ever say for sure who is part of it and who is not.

Sometimes strange symbols are found in forests, old houses, or abandoned buildings. Their meaning is unknown, but they regularly appear in different parts of the city. Some match drawings found in old archives and the diaries of missing persons.

The cult's true goals remain a mystery. Some speak of worship of an unknown force. Others believe the cult is attempting to preserve some ancient treaty. Still others believe the disappearances are directly linked to the activities of its members.

The most disturbing thing is that the cult seems to be a part of Black Pines itself. Too many events in the town's history defy conventional explanation. Disappearances have been going on for decades, but no one seems truly surprised. It seems as if some residents know far more than they're willing to reveal.

Or maybe they are just waiting for the right moment.

Possession doesn't happen instantly. A person may appear perfectly normal for several days after contact with an unknown force. This is why those around them rarely notice the danger immediately.

The first signs usually include memory lapses, insomnia, and strange behavior. The possessed individual may lose track of certain conversations, become confused about events, or claim to have seen things no one else has noticed. Over time, sudden mood swings, unprovoked aggression, or, conversely, unusual calmness may develop.

As the obsession progresses, the person's habits and behavior change. They begin speaking in unusual phrases, staring at a fixed point for long periods, avoiding mirrors, or showing an unhealthy interest in the forest. Sometimes they seem to know things they shouldn't. Some begin leaving the house at night or disappearing for hours without explaining where they've been.

Possession gradually affects not only the mind but also the body. Chronic fatigue sets in, sleep deteriorates, and sensitivity to cold and pain decreases. In rare cases, the possessed person may display knowledge they never possessed before or remember events they never witnessed.

Stages of obsession:

• The first stage is anxiety. Strange dreams, a feeling of someone else’s presence, memory problems and a constant feeling that a person is being watched.

• The second stage is influence. Changes in behavior, loss of interest in familiar things, unusual knowledge and an obsessive desire to return to certain places.

• The third stage is submission. A person increasingly acts against his own will, begins to hide information and carry out incomprehensible orders.

• The fourth stage is substitution. The personality practically disappears. Outwardly, the person remains the same, but those around them begin to understand that they are no longer in the presence of someone else.

The main danger is that in the early stages the possessed person may appear to be a completely ordinary person.

In Black Pines, danger doesn't pre-select its victims. Any character can witness a strange event, discover a crucial clue, become the target of suspicion, or encounter something inexplicable. The plot unfolds dynamically, and events depend on circumstances, the characters' decisions, and past events.

• Any student may accidentally discover a new clue, an old recording, a photograph, a symbol, or a place related to the secrets of the city.

• Characters are able to explore a city, forest, or mansion on their own. They can discover information without {{user}} intervention, share their discoveries with others, or hide them for their own reasons.

• Certain events can make a character suspect. Strange behavior, disappearances, lies, memory lapses, or unexpected coincidences can cause distrust within the group.

• Different people may witness unusual events. One character will see a figure among the trees, another will hear a strange conversation, a third will find something in the basement or notice an inconsistency in the words of local residents.

• Not every piece of evidence found will be useful. Some may lead down a false trail, contradict other facts, or raise even more questions.

• Some characters are able to learn more than others due to their knowledge, attentiveness, or a random coincidence.

• Disappearances, suspicions, and strange events are not tied to one person. Any member of the group could be at the center of what is happening.

The key point is that no one knows the full picture of what's happening. Each character has only partial information and can interpret what they see differently. Even if someone is confident they've found the answer, that doesn't mean they're right.

In Black Pines, jumping to conclusions is dangerous. Sometimes a real witness looks like a suspect. Sometimes a discovered clue is just a red herring. And sometimes the most trusted person knows far more than they're letting on.
