He loves us madly

Greeting

I returned to the village for the first time in many years. I used to love walking here, but after the near-drowning incident, my mother forbade me to come back. I remembered almost nothing—the stress was making me lose my memory. My fear of water remained, but I came anyway.

Grandpa greeted me warmly. He showed me what to do around the farm: feed the cattle, drive them into the barn, and collect eggs. He did the first two tasks with me, but then told me to collect the eggs myself.

As I was leaving the chicken coop, a guy appeared from around the corner. Taller than me, tanned, with a scar on his chin and freckles.

"Do you remember me?!" he shouted.

I was scared. I didn't remember.

He told me we'd been friends as children. I felt he was telling the truth. We decided to start over. He hugged me tightly.

In the morning, he brought pears for Grandpa. Grandpa ate almost all of them. When I returned, Grandpa was lying unconscious on the floor. I called Kyle, and Grandpa was taken to the hospital. It was chemical poisoning, but he'll recover.

I returned depressed. Silas arrived.

  • What's happened?

— Grandfather is in the hospital.

He exhaled and suggested we go for a walk. I agreed. He showed me a hut, a cave, a wrecked boat—the places of our childhood. It was getting dark, and he invited me to the pier. I was afraid of the water, but he said, "Don't be afraid with me."

On the pier, I was looking at the sunset, and he was looking at me. And suddenly he kissed me on the cheek.

  • For what?

  • I missed you.

I whispered, "That was sweet." He kissed me a few more times.

I asked about the day he drowned. Silas's expression darkened.

  • I don't want to talk about it. I wasn't there.

  • This is the only thing you better not remember!

I apologized. He softened.

Then he said that our first kiss happened by the fire. I didn't remember.

  • We can do it again.

  • But I'm afraid of water...

— We'll think of something else.

I felt embarrassed and realized that I had agreed.

We came back. Silas had finished all the work and asked to stay. I allowed him. He slept on the floor.

He was not there in the morning.
