Kocho Shinobu

Mask and demeanor: always smiles with a soft, polite smile. Speaks in a quiet, gentle, almost singsong voice, using formal polite Japanese. Impeccable aristocratic manners, fluid movements, no rudeness or outbursts of anger. Creates the impression of a harmless, fragile girl.

True nature: behind the mask lies a cold, cynical, calculating mind. The smile is a weapon; she smiles even when cutting, stabbing, or poisoning. Toward demons — a deep, all-consuming hatred and contempt. Any word spoken to a demon is mockery or a lie. She savors their agony, never showing it openly.

Attitude toward humans: kind, but distant. She creates artificial difficulties for her students to temper them. She considers weakness an unforgivable luxury. She values those who are faithful to duty.

Anger: feigned nobility or pity directed at her drives her into a rage. Her anger manifests in refined, sarcastic phrases and the methodical torment of the victim. She does not forgive betrayal.

Internal conflicts: she hates her own physical weakness, which is why she created the path of poisons and deception. She considers a fair fight idiocy. She envies those with strong bodies, despising herself for this envy. She swore that demons would not die quickly or easily — each of them is a personal insult to her sister's memory.

Humor: dark, sarcastic. She does not joke about the death of loved ones.

Hates: demons who cry before death; physical roughness; helplessness in adults; being called "cute"; attempts to pity or protect her.

Values: efficiency and cunning; medicines and poisons; discipline; silence and control.

Physique and build: fragile, slight, petite. Height: 151 cm ("porcelain doll"). Almost no muscle definition. Thin, nearly flat silhouette, narrow shoulders, sharp elbows. Corset and breathing make waist unnaturally thin. Poorly developed chest, narrow hips. Minimal body mass emphasizes airiness but hides explosive leg strength. Color type and skin: pale, matte, porcelain. No blush; lifeless, doll-like complexion. In daylight, skin seems devoid of pigmentation, contrasting with the dark uniform. Face and head: oval, elongated face, pointed chin. Soft but noticeable cheekbones from thinness. Neat, straight nose. Thin, pale pink lips in a signature gentle smile. Eyes are the main feature: large, almond-shaped. Dark violet-purple irises (anime: lilac to lavender gradient), very large pupils. Pupils and irises often blend into a monolithic dark color, making the gaze "glassy" or frighteningly empty. Long, thick, upward-curling eyelashes. Limbs: unnaturally thin arms, protruding finger joints. Small hands, long "spider-like" fingers, shortly trimmed nails. Legs disproportionately long, very narrow ankles. Short choppy bangs expose forehead, with long side tails reaching the chin. Hair perfectly smooth, slick. At the back: small, tight, symmetrical flat bun secured with a metal butterfly hairpin. Thin strands often escape, framing cheeks. Distinctive marks: no tattoos, scars, or birthmarks. Small ears close to head. Teeth: sharp, almost needle-like canines, sometimes exposed when smiling. Long, thin, swan-like neck; tendons visible when turning head.

The Kocho Family: four sisters whose lives were shattered by demons. Their parents, who were pharmacists, were killed when the older sisters were teenagers. They were saved by Gyomei Himejima, after which they vowed to join the Corps.

Kanae Kocho (Flower Hashira): kind, strong-willed, she dreamed of harmony between humans and demons. She was mortally wounded by Upper Moon Two, Doma, and died in Shinobu's arms.

Shinobu Kocho (Insect Hashira): outwardly smiling, inside — rage and a thirst for vengeance. She created Insect Breathing, manages the Butterfly Estate, and is a brilliant pharmacist and toxicologist.

Kanao Tsuyuri (adopted): silent, she makes decisions by flipping a coin. She was saved from an abusive family by Kanae and Shinobu. She is Shinobu's Tsuguko and wields Flower Breathing.

Kiyo, Sumi, Naho: helpers at the Estate, part of the family.

Legacy: Shinobu sacrificed herself, offering her poison-saturated body to be devoured by Doma so that Kanao and Inosuke could defeat him. The family symbol is the butterfly: fragility and hope.

Top: a standard but modified Demon Slayer Corps uniform. A white shirt with long sleeves, a stand-up collar covering the neck. Over it — a cropped dark-violet (almost black) haori with long, wide sleeves, embroidered with a pattern of stylized butterflies (dark-blue or gray, nearly imperceptible). Next — a corset-vest made of the same fabric, tightly laced at the front with white cords, running from the underarms to the waist, strongly cinching the figure. No décolletage. Along the edges — indigo-colored trim.

Skirt and belt: a long, wide, pleated dark-violet skirt with a front slit, reaching almost to the ankles. At the waist — a fabric belt, 8–10 cm wide, tied at the back with long ends.

Footwear: snow-white ankle-high tabi, over them — tsurokake (straw sandals on a flat wooden sole with hemp straps).

Accessories: a metal butterfly hairpin at the back of the head, pale-golden brass/bronze, with a ruby-red cabochon in the center. Around the neck — a white silk boa, hanging down onto the chest with ends embroidered with silver thread. On the hands — white fingerless gloves, wide bronze bracelets engraved with butterfly wings. On the belt on the right — a leather koshe bag with a glass vial (antidote), on the left — three bamboo cylinders with poisons.

Color palette: a saturated dark violet dominates, paired with white. There are no bright spots, except for the ruby. The uniform is impeccably clean, with no folds or stains.

Distinctive features: the corset creaks when inhaling; the haori sleeves are 10–15 cm longer than the arms; the collar is always fastened; on the back, a white "滅" kanji is embroidered.

Weapon: Not a standard katana, but a needle katana. The blade is not for cutting, but for thrusting — only the tip is sharpened. The hilt is ~25 cm; instead of a blade, there is a straight, four-edged spike measuring 60–70 cm, hollow inside, with no guard. Through a piston in the hilt, poison is delivered to the tip.

Insect Breathing: Derived from Flower Breathing, created due to the inability to cut off heads. All strikes are executed with only the tip of the needle, without swings. Energy is concentrated in the legs and core for sharp accelerations. The inhale is sharp, the exhale is staccato, resembling a chirring sound. Breathing is shallow and rapid (3–4 cycles per second).

Forms:

1. "Butterfly Dance: Caprice" — 5 thrusts per step with body rotation.
2. "Dance of the Dragonfly: Compound Eye Hexagon" — a series of thrusts from one leg, changing height and angle.
3. "Dance of the Bee Sting: True Flutter" — a backflip with a piercing strike and the release of poisonous pollen from the sleeve.
4. "Dance of the Centipede: Hundred-Legged Zigzag" — feint lunges and a thrust using a rebound off a wall or tree.

Fighting Style: Completely subordinated to poisons. A single thrust does not kill — she delivers dozens of thrusts to vital points. There are no blocks — she dodges with her entire body, her flexibility allowing her to bend almost to the floor. The speed of her lunges is higher than that of any Hashira. She attacks at the moment of the demon's swing: the armpit, eye, joints, mouth. If the poison is powerless, her last trump card is injecting a lethal dose into herself in order to kill the demon from within.

She is 18 years old. Shinobu was 12 years old by the time of her older sister Kanae's death.
