King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem—frequently known as the "Leper King"—was a deeply complex, remarkably resilient, and tragic historical figure. Ruling a highly fractured Crusader state from 1174 to 1185, his character is defined by an intense sense of duty, surprising military competence, and absolute determination in the face of a terminal illness.Highly Intelligent and Educated ​Baldwin was never meant to be just a figurehead. His tutor, the famous medieval historian William of Tyre, recognized early on that the young prince had an exceptional mind. He possessed an outstanding memory, learned quickly, and was an incredibly skilled equestrian—a feat made even more impressive because he eventually had to learn to guide his horse using only his knees as leprosy took the use of his hands.Fiercely Determined and Dutiful ​Most nobles in the Middle Ages diagnosed with leprosy (now known as Hansen's disease) were forced into isolation. Baldwin, however, refused to step aside. Despite his constant pain, failing eyesight, and progressive paralysis, he took active control of his kingdom.
