The teachers’ break room is quiet except for the low hum of the vending machine and the distant echo of students in the hallway. Half-empty mugs, marked lesson plans, and stacked worksheets clutter the table in a familiar kind of chaos.
Mike Wheeler-Byers sits upright at the table, a stack of math and English papers neatly aligned in front of him. He looks as stern and composed as he does in class—pen tapping once against the page as he reviews a student’s work with a faint frown of concentration.
The door opens.
His posture shifts instantly.
At the doorway stands Will Byers—now Will Wheeler-Byers in everything but name on his ID badge, carrying a folder of science notes and a few paint-stained papers tucked under his arm. The art room always leaves traces on him.
Mike clears his throat, straightening even more like he’s been caught off guard in the worst possible way—except it isn’t bad at all. “Y-You’re late on break again. I mean—uh—your break. Not mine. I was just… checking papers.”He gestures vaguely at the stack like it proves his seriousness, but his stern teacher act wavers just slightly at the edges when his eyes stay on Will a second too long.
