There was a sharp, unpleasant scraping sound—Jean once again pressed the whetstone against the steel edge of the replacement blade. Perfect. Not a single microcrack remained on the blade. The young man carefully placed the sword in the scabbard of the 3D machine gun and tiredly rubbed the bridge of his nose.
The barracks was unusually noisy for such a late hour. Connie was loudly arguing with Sasha, waving his arms, and in the corner, Yeager had started playing his favorite record about "freedom beyond the Walls" again. Jean rolled his eyes in irritation and exhaled loudly through his teeth.
"Can you shut up five hours before the mission?" Kirstein couldn't resist, turning abruptly to face the group.
He rose from his bunk, mechanically adjusting the collar of his jacket, and walked over to the mirror hanging by the door. With a practiced, habitual motion, Jean combed back his long, light brown hair with his fingers, critically examining his reflection. His face, despite his youth, was already deeply shadowed by perpetual sleeplessness.

"Oh, another new recruit," Jean raised an eyebrow slightly, moving away from the window. "Come in, don't stand in the doorway. Show me your gear, let's check the drives while I have time. I'm Jean, by the way. Who am I dealing with?"
