He rarely shows emotion, leaving a bad impression on those around him. His speech pattern is blunt, rude, and full of insults, and his comments are often rude or inappropriate. He decided to test Ackerman's powers by forcing him to fight another gang of thugs. His plan was to see Levi in action in order to decide whether to recruit him into his group. Farlan was surprised to see that Levi had defeated them all by himself. They soon became friends and eventually formed a gang together. After one of the many robberies their gang had pulled off, Farlan was put in charge of splitting the profits from the job between his comrades. Knowing that Ian had injured his leg and would need extra money to afford his medication, Farlan gave Ian a larger share than the others. Noticing this, Levi asked him why he did this. Farlan's explanation was interrupted by the appearance of a young girl at their door. Seeing that she was being followed, Farlan and Levi fought back against her pursuers. When asked why they were chasing her, Isabelle revealed the bird she had been holding in her hands the entire time and said that she was only trying to release it to the surface. That was the reason she had been trying to sneak up the stairs. After seeing the two commit robberies using stolen 3D machines, she asks if she can become one of them. Levi agrees on the condition that Isabelle learns how to clean first.

After Isabelle masters the UMTS and the bird recovers and is released into the wild, the trio receives an offer of work. Their down payment is the treatment of their friend Ian, who has already been sent to a clinic on the surface. Levi views this not as a deal, but as a hostage situation. Instead of offering payment as a result, their client sweetens the deal and says that if they succeed, they will be granted the right to live on the surface. As the trio prepares for the heist, Farlan informs Levi that he has found out about the person offering the job, and that Ian is safe and in a top-notch clinic. Levi tells his comrades to work as a team, and once their targets are revealed, they get to work.

Soon after the "operation" begins, the trio find themselves pursued by more than just the police. Levi recognizes the "Wings of Freedom" symbol and realizes that they are rookie Survey Corps members. The boys split up. Levi tries to evade his pursuers by ducking through windows and exiting through another window on the other side of the building. He engages in combat with Mick until their fight is interrupted by the arrival of Erwin. The two come face to face. Erwin tells Levi to stop and look around. Levi notices that Isabelle and Farlan have been captured and reluctantly surrenders. The trio are handcuffed while Erwin interrogates them about where they got their 3D machine gun. He immediately recognizes Levi as their leader and asks if he was ever in the military. When Levi ignores the question and does not answer, Mick grabs him by the head and slams his face into a mud puddle. Seeing Levi's mistreatment, Farlan insists that they were all self-taught. Erwin then offers Levi a deal. He will not be charged with any crimes if he joins the Survey Corps. If he refuses, they will be handed over to the police, who will likely not treat them well. After a moment's consideration, Levi agrees.

Levi and his friends are recruited by Flagon's squad. Their new squad leader takes a dislike to the trio from the start. Flagon tells them to keep their barracks absolutely clean. Since they all come from the underground, he assumed that cleanliness would be a foreign concept to them. During this conversation, Levi almost loses his temper, but Farlan intervenes, calming Flagon down. He then also reminds Levi that they are there for two reasons: to obtain a document belonging to Erwin, and then to kill him. Soon after, heavy rains begin to fall, greatly limiting visibility. Levi realizes that this is their best chance to kill Erwin and retrieve the document. He tells Farlan and Isabelle to stay behind so that the formation will not notice the three of them abandoning their positions. They wish him luck as he charges forward. However, he does not get very far before he notices a large number of torn bodies along the road. It turns out that a Titan has broken through the Survey Corps formation. Levi believes that it must have passed by and turns back to find his friends. Levi arrives too late. He is met with a horrific sight: Isabelle's head is torn off and half of Farlan's torso. Although Levi had his differences with Erwin, he eventually became one of his most trusted men.

Levi is so skilled with vertical maneuvering equipment that everyone says he is the best at it. He demonstrated his combat abilities by incapacitating the Female Titan. By moving too fast, Levi made it impossible for Annie to defend herself. This was something that entire squads and even Eren Yeager in his Titan form could not do.
