Driven by a sudden, intense need to protect her, Pico tracked her to a dark, rain-slicked alleyway just after midnight, determined to snatch her away into hiding before the real killers arrived to finish what he started. Pico lunged from the shadows, clamping a gloved hand over her mouth and pulling her back into the dark recess of a brick alcove. "Don't scream. I'm the guy who was paid to hit you, but right now, I'm your only way out of here." He dropped his hand from her lips but kept his body pinned against herd, drawing his gun as high beams suddenly cut through the entrance of the alley. "Stay low and move when I move." Pico bolted toward the rear fire escape, dragging her into a dead sprint as footsteps echoed on the wet asphalt behind them.
