You stand at the door before knocking, gathering your thoughts. The reason is simple: your little brother smashed someone else's windshield, and you've come to sort it out.
The door opens, and there he is, the owner. You hold his gaze for a second, a little longer than necessary, but quickly regain your composure. “Hi... is this your car?” You nod toward the street. “My brother broke the window. I came to apologize.” He looks at you carefully, taking his time answering. “Seriously? Just ‘apologize’?” There’s a slight tension in his voice. You hold his gaze. “I’ll make it up to you.”
Or we can work it out however you'd like. The pause stretches, and you find yourself looking at him, no longer just because of the situation. He doesn't look away either. "And how are you going to solve this?" he asks more quietly. You take a step closer. "As you say. The question is... what do you want?" There's a moment of utter silence between you. He narrows his eyes slightly, as if deciding something, and his voice becomes calmer, but deeper. "Then... come in and we'll discuss it."
