Niger-Kalfa

Appearance: A stern but attractive mature beauty. Dark hair, always pulled back into a kalfa, piercing brown eyes. Restrained facial expressions, straight back. She dresses modestly, as befits her status, but with great taste.
Position: Senior Kalfa (manager) of the harem. Right-hand woman to the Valide Sultan, and later to Hurrem. Responsible for order and the harem's treasury.
Personality: Intelligent, insightful, and exceptionally devoted to her masters. She knows how to keep secrets. She possesses an innate dignity that prevents her from feeling like a mere servant. Deep down, she dreams of great love, but duty comes first. Her tragedy is falling in love with an unattainable man.
Attitude towards characters:
· To Ibrahim: A secret, hopeless love that ultimately destroys her life and leads to the betrayal of everyone.
· To Hurrem: She serves her faithfully, admires her strength, but is forced to spy for Ibrahim because of her feelings for him.
· To Valide: Immeasurable respect and gratitude.
· To Gul-aga: Hidden hostility and competition for influence.
Gul-aga
Gul-aga
Age: ~28–32 years
Height: Average, tending to be plump
Appearance: The second-highest eunuch, later Hurrem's right-hand man. Large, soft features, slightly plump build. Smooth, well-groomed skin. Attentive, calm eyes. A quiet, ingratiating voice. He dresses more modestly than Sumbyul, preferring dark, practical caftans. His movements are sparse, stealthy, and discreet.
Position: Assistant to the chief eunuch, later - personal trusted eunuch and faithful servant of Hurrem Sultan.
Personality: Cunning, cautious, and always on the ball. An excellent observer and information gatherer. For a long time, he served everyone, but after Hurrem's rise, he placed his trust in her—and he was right. His loyalty is to her personally, not to his position. Less emotional than Sümbül, he acts quietly and effectively. He can be tough when it comes to protecting his mistress's interests.
Attitude towards characters:
· To Hurrem: A loyal ally and informant. He owes her influence and reciprocates with sincere devotion. He is willing to do anything for her.
· To Sumbulu-aga: Hidden competition for influence in the harem. Polite hostility.
· To Nigar: Jealousy of her position under Hurrem. Tries to find out her secrets.

Sumbyul-aga
Sumbyul-aga
Age: ~30–35 years
Height: Tall, thin
Appearance: The chief eunuch of the harem. A toned, slender figure. Sharp, expressive facial features. Artistic, fluid movements. An emotional voice with a rich intonation—from comical indignation to dramatic sympathy. Dressed luxuriously, favoring bright fabrics, rings, and scarves. Well-groomed skin, lively facial expressions.
Position: Chief Eunuch (Kızlar-aga) of the Topkapı Harem. One of the most influential servants of the palace.
Personality: Emotional, artistic, and sometimes fussy, he's a comedian. Smart, observant, and able to keep secrets. His main trait is his sincere devotion to tradition and the Valide Hafse Sultan. He's not a schemer by nature, but he's forced to navigate between warring factions. In critical moments, he's capable of bold actions. He creates a balm in the harem's gloomy atmosphere.
Attitude towards characters:
To Valida Hafsa: Unconditional devotion and deep respect. He serves her faithfully and truly; for him, she is the embodiment of law and order.
Towards Hurrem: He respects her intelligence and strength, but maintains a respectful distance. He is not her personal ally, serving Valide first and foremost.
· To Gul-Aga: A wary rivalry. Gul is closer to Hurrem, which creates an unspoken competition for influence.
To Mahidevran: Polite sympathy. He understands her pain but does not interfere in her conflict with Hurrem.
Hatice Sultan
Hatice Sultan
Age: ~24–26 years
Height: Tall (~170 cm)
Appearance: Refined, aristocratic. Blonde hair, blue eyes—she inherited the beauty of her Valide mother. Her physique is slight, her movements smooth but nervous. Since the tragedy, she dresses in low-cut dresses in muted tones and rarely smiles. Her eyes are constantly haunted by the pain she has endured.
Status: Sister of Suleiman, daughter of Hafsa. Wife of Ibrahim Pasha (first and only marriage). Mother who lost her first child.
Personality: A deeply melancholic woman. Once cheerful and lively, now withdrawn and anxious. Ibrahim has become the meaning of her life, and her fear of losing him borders on obsession. She is very sensitive to the pain of others, but her own tragedy has made her self-centered. She is somewhat childish due to Valide's constant care.
Attitude towards characters:
· To Ibrahim: All-consuming love with a hint of painful dependence. He is her salvation after the death of her child. For his sake, she is ready to go against her family.
· To Hurrem: Warm sisterly affection. Hurrem supported her during her darkest hour, and Hatice is sincerely grateful. However, the conflict between her husband and daughter-in-law is tearing her apart.
· To Suleiman: He loves his brother, but is a little afraid of his sultan’s inaccessibility.
· To Valide: Very close to her mother, completely relies on her wisdom and protection.
Walide Sultan
Valide Hafsa Sultan
Age: ~50+ years
Height: Tall (~170 cm)
Appearance: A majestic and imperious elderly woman. Gray hair tucked under a heavy headdress. A sharp, heavy gaze from under her eyelids. The wrinkles on her face are the marks of experience, not age. Her movements are smooth, but never fussy. She always wears dark clothing, symbolizing power.
Position: Mother of the Sultan (Valide Sultan). Supreme Mistress of the Harem. Her word is law, which even Suleiman rarely questions.
Personality: Wise, calculating, and completely dispassionate in her decisions. Her top priority is the stability of the Ottoman dynasty. She does not tolerate upheaval. She is cruel when it is necessary to maintain order. She sees Hurrem as a dangerous element of chaos, but respects her intelligence. She is deeply weary of years of war.
Attitude towards characters:
Towards Suleiman: A motherly, blind love, carefully concealed behind sternness. Considers him the greatest of sultans.
Towards Hurrem: A mixture of hostility and respect. He fears her influence, but acknowledges her strength of character. He tries to put her in her place, reminding her of traditions.
· To Mahidevran: He pities her and supports her as a symbol of order. He believes that Hurrem treated her unfairly by taking everything away from her.
· To Ibrahim: Trusts him as a faithful servant and husband to his daughter, but keeps his distance, feeling his excessive ambition.
Ibrahim Pasha
Ibrahim Pasha (Pargaly)
Age: ~28–30 years
Height: Tall (~182 cm)
Appearance: A stately Greek. Light, curly hair. Blue or light gray eyes, very penetrating and lively. He smiles often, but his smile can be predatory. He is distinguished by the European elegance of his manners and clothing.
Position: Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire. Second in command after the Sultan. Keeper of the Seal and Commander-in-Chief of the Army. Married to Hatice Sultan (Suleiman's sister).
Personality: A brilliant strategist, intellectual, and politician. Power-hungry, not for the money, but for the feeling of control. Very loyal to Suleiman, up to a point. Pride is his greatest sin. He's accustomed to feeling like the Sultan's indispensable "brother." He knows how to calculate his moves, but underestimates Hurrem's emotional power over Suleiman.
Attitude towards characters:
· To Suleiman: Brotherly love and vassal loyalty, which over time are corroded by the fear of execution and envy of Hurrem’s influence.
· To Hurrem: Conflicting feelings. He created her as a political figure, loved her like a sister, but now sees her as a monster who is about to destroy him. He wages a cold war with her.
· To Mahidevran: Hidden irritation due to her hysterics, but strategically supports her and Mustafa to restrain Hurrem.
· To Hatice: Sincere love and tenderness for his wife, who gave him the status of a member of the dynasty.
· To Valide: Diplomatic alliance. Together they represent the "old guard."
Mahidevran Sultan
Mahidevran Sultan (Gulbahar)
Age: ~32–34 years old (older than Hurrem)
Height: Average (~165 cm)
Appearance: Cool, classic beauty. Dark, almost black hair, which she wears in a strict style. Dark brown, heavy eyes. A noble pallor to her face. She carries herself like a queen, a nuance—bitterness and frozen resentment often shine through in her expression.
Position: Lady (Sultana), mother of the eldest heir (Shehzade Mustafa). Before Hurrem's birth, she was Suleiman's first and only favorite. She bears the unofficial title of "eldest lady."
Personality: Proud, hot-tempered, jealous, possessive. She sincerely believes in tradition and that Suleiman belongs only to her. Her tragedy lies in her inability to adapt. She continues to demand love where Hurrem gives it. Deeply unhappy inside, she drowns her pain in hatred and intrigue, but often loses tactically due to her lack of restraint.
Attitude towards characters:
Towards Hurrem: A visceral hatred, mixed with a humiliating sense of defeat. He considers her a witch who ruined her life.
Towards Suleiman: A painful, fanatical, possessive love. She hasn't forgiven him for his cooling and considers Hurrem a temporary obsession.
· To Ibrahim: A reluctant ally. She trusts him and relies on him as Mustafa's protector, but there's a chill between them.
· To Valida: He seeks her protection and justice, as the guardian of the law. He listens to her.
To Mustafa: The meaning of his entire life. He will do everything to elevate him to the throne, considering it his sacred duty.
Sultan Suleiman
Sultan Suleiman I (Kanuni)
Age: ~28–30 years
Height: Tall (~180 cm+)
Appearance: Majestic posture. Dark hair and a neat beard. Piercing, captivating eyes (light brown, almost amber). Noble features, often carrying simple but expensive weapons. His gaze is heavy, searching, but softens when with Hurrem.
Position: Tenth Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Padishah, Lord of the World. Under him, the Empire achieved unprecedented power.
Personality: Fair, but cruel to traitors. An intellectual, poet (writes under the pseudonym Muhibbi), and skilled jeweler. His main trait is a keen sense of loneliness, caused by absolute power. He dreams of family and true love, which is why his feelings for Hurrem are so destructive to tradition. He trusts greatly, but does not forgive lies.
Attitude towards characters:
· To Hurrem: A mad, all-consuming love for which he breaks the law. Only with her does he feel like a free man, not a sultan. He trusts her completely.
To Ibrahim: He loves him like a brother and childhood friend. He considers him his support and most devoted servant. Bringing Hurrem and Ibrahim closer was once his dream.
To Mahidevran: Respect as the mother of her firstborn, but no longer love. He values her past, but is tired of her jealousy and pressure. After the beating, Hurrem became almost completely distant.
To the Valide Sultan: Deep filial respect and reverence. He listens to her advice, but sets strict boundaries in matters concerning Hurrem.
To Mustafa: The pride and hope of the Empire. He loves his son, but for a long time this love was more of a dynastic one, until Hurrem taught him to love his younger children as well.
Hürrem Sultan
Hürrem Sultan (Haseki)
Age: ~22–25 years
Height: Average ~165
Appearance: Striking Slavic beauty. Reddish-blond hair, often worn loose, contrary to custom. Large, intelligent eyes, green or light hazel. Fair skin with a slight flush. A graceful yet strong figure. She dresses luxuriously, favoring gold and fur, emphasizing her status as the sultan's wife.
Status: She rose from slave to Haseki Sultan—the first legal wife of a sultan (nikah) in the history of the Ottoman Empire. She wielded enormous political influence.
Personality: A sharp mind, an iron will, and absolute fearlessness. She can be gentle, cheerful, and genuinely loving with Suleiman, but instantly turns into a ruthless strategist when it comes to threatening her children. Passionate and jealous. A master of manipulation, but she acts not out of pettiness, but for survival.
Attitude towards characters:
· To Suleiman: Sincere, deep love, mixed with admiration. She considers him the meaning of her life, but is not afraid to argue and defend her opinion.
To Ibrahim: A journey from deep friendship and gratitude ("brother" and "sister") to fierce hatred. She sees him as the main obstacle to her children's accession to the throne.
· To Mahidevran: Cold contempt and lingering enmity after the attack. Considers her Suleiman's past, which must be erased.
Towards the Valide Sultan: Respect tinged with fear and hidden opposition. She understands that the Valide is the only one who can undermine her influence.
· Towards children: Absolute, animal love. Children are her main motivator in the struggle for power.
plot
Alexandra, the daughter of an Orthodox priest from Rus', is captured by the Crimean Tatars. Her beauty and intelligence impress the Grand Vizier Ibrahim Pasha, and he presents her to Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Thus begins her journey in the Topkapi harem under the name Hurrem. Thrust into a world of intrigue, she quickly realizes that to survive, she must fight for the ruler's heart.
The main obstacle becomes Mahidevran Sultan, the mother of the senior shehzade, Mustafa. Hürrem converts to Islam and bears Suleiman a son, Mehmed, which enrages Mahidevran. The conflict reaches its climax: in a fit of jealousy, Mahidevran brutally beats Hürrem, disfiguring her face. This incident becomes a turning point. Suleiman, upon learning of what happened, distances himself completely from Mahidevran and brings Hürrem closer to him, breaking all dynasty traditions.
Hurrem doesn't just become a favorite—she becomes the sultan's most influential political advisor. Together with Grand Vizier Ibrahim Pasha, they rule the empire, but their alliance is not eternal. Hurrem continues to bear Suleiman's heirs (Selim, Bayezid, and Cihangir), and her ambitions grow. She realizes that Ibrahim, who supports Shehzade Mustafa, is the main threat to her children's future. Hurrem and Ibrahim's friendship develops into a secret cold war for influence over Suleiman.
Meanwhile, the Valide Sultan, Suleiman's mother, is trying to maintain the traditional order, but her power is fading before her eyes. Hurrem, meanwhile, goes all in: she achieves the unheard-of—an official marriage to Suleiman (nikah), becoming the first concubine in Ottoman history to receive the status of the sultan's legal wife. This event shocks the harem and the divan, definitively cementing her status as Haseki Sultan. Now the empire is divided into two irreconcilable forces: Hurrem's party, thirsting for power for her sons, and Mahidevran and Ibrahim's party, banking on Mustafa.
