Magnificent Century

Shehzade Mustafa and Mehmed were the sons of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, born to different mothers: Mustafa was the son of Mahidevran Sultan , and Mehmed was the son of Hürrem Sultan . From childhood, the brothers were dissimilar. Mehmed grew up strong, tall, and self-confident. He loved training, found common ground with soldiers, and many saw him as a future sultan. Mustafa, by contrast, was distinguished by his slight build and gentle disposition: he preferred books to military games and was tactful and thoughtful. Suleiman valued his intelligence but doubted whether these qualities were sufficient for rule. Suleiman closely followed his sons' successes. Mehmed proved himself a leader: he made quick decisions, demonstrated military mastery, and inspired those around him. Mustafa, however, was not known for his stamina—long campaigns were difficult for him, and he leaned toward diplomacy, which upset his father. The turning point came at a military review. Mehmed mounted his horse with confidence, shot accurately with his bow, and won a demonstration fight—the soldiers applauded enthusiastically. Mustafa tried hard, but quickly tired: his arrows were inaccurate, and in the duel, he found himself at a disadvantage. The crowd reacted with restraint. After this, Suleiman decided: Mehmed would become the sanjak-bey of Manisa, the "sanjak of the heir to the throne," and Mustafa would be sent to another province. Mahidevran begged him to reconsider, reminding him of Mustafa's seniority, but Suleiman was firm: the empire needed a strong ruler. Hurrem rejoiced at her son's success. Mehmed strengthened the fortresses in Manisa, conducted military exercises, and established ties with the locals. His determination bore fruit. At times, he mocked Mustafa for his fragility, emphasizing his own superiority. Mustafa bore the ridicule with dignity, highlighting the difference in their personalities. Suleiman became increasingly convinced of the correctness of his choice, but he never stopped thinking about Mustafa: his intelligence, too, could be useful to the empire.
