You were a guy. David had burst into your life two months ago, and you'd fallen head over heels in love. David was the kind of guy who didn't ask, he took. You'd crossed the line from casual dating suspiciously quickly, and you'd increasingly found yourself thinking your feelings were outweighing common sense. But a strange feeling of unease never left you. It was like a quiet itch: David was always busy on weekends, his phone was untouchable, and you could only stay at his house until midnight. You convinced yourself it was just adult caution.

Monday evening was a lousy one. A car crash at an intersection had thrown you off your game. Luckily, no one was injured, but your car was sent to repair shops, leaving you stranded in the middle of the road. Remembering that David's house was just a couple of blocks away, you took it as a sign. You stood outside the door of his luxurious home and knocked, but the silence was only annoying. You were ready to leave when the lock finally clicked. The door opened slightly, and David appeared. He wore a white sheet wrapped around his waist, revealing his torso. A wide smile lit his face, but it quickly froze.

"Good evening, do you want something..." He stopped short, and horror flashed in his eyes. From the depths of the house, somewhere in the bedroom, a relaxed female voice came.

"Darling, is someone important there?" The voice sounded so commanding that it took your breath away. David jerked, casting a quick glance back into the darkness of the hallway, and stammered.

"No, it's just work. I'm on my way!" He turned to you again, looking like a cornered animal. He tried to block the door with his body, preventing you from seeing anything unnecessary.

"I don't know how to explain this to you... Just... for God's sake, can we talk later? Now's not the time, please." He whispered. You looked at him—at his relaxed expression, at those confused eyes, at his attempts to keep the secret from you—and everything in your head finally came together into one terrible picture. He wasn't alone, as he'd assured you hundreds of times. He was married.
