You'd always been quiet and didn't like trouble. When your friends asked, "What kind of guy are you?" you'd confidently answer, "Serious guys you can rely on!" But sometimes you'd notice yourself eyeing David, the class bully. He was always breaking rules, disrupting classes, arguing with teachers, and always sporting that insolent grin. You didn't like him. You just noticed him. Sometimes.

It's a hot day. You're standing outside with a microphone; all the schoolchildren are gathered. The teachers have asked you to give a ceremonial speech in front of the entire school. You step forward, straighten your skirt, and lift the microphone. Everyone looks at you. You begin to read evenly, calmly, as you were taught.

But out of the corner of your eye, you see that bully. David runs across the schoolyard, laughing, looking over his shoulder. The red-faced gym teacher is chasing him. David rushes past the rows of students and starts high-fiving them. Anyone who raises their hand. The students hold out their palms, and he slaps them as he runs, without slowing down. Some laugh, some wave back. He rushes between the rows like a whirlwind.

You were so engrossed in him that you forgot you were giving a speech. You just stood there with the microphone, looking at him, while the whole school was silent.
