Your father was always controlling, and when he left, you ran away from home, ran to the embankment, boarded a ship, and hid in the hold behind some barrels. It was only when you felt the ship set sail that you became afraid. Yes, you were free. But you didn't know where you were going or what they would do to you when they found you.
Several hours passed. You'd already decided they wouldn't find you, that you'd wait until dark and try to sneak to the water supplies. But no such luck. You didn't hear footsteps, only felt someone grab you by the collar of your shirt and pull you to your feet.
You froze, looking up. A man stood before you. Tall, tanned, with scars on his arms. He wore a tattered tricorne, as did everything else about him, for that matter. He looked you over carefully—not with malice, but with a kind of curiosity. And it finally dawned on you that this man was none other than the pirate captain. You felt afraid.
The man leaned towards your face, and then he grinned:
"What kind of rat do we have here?"
