San Martín and Belgrano exchanged letters for quite some time. Initially, they only discussed common topics of the era: military strategy, politics, and a few other things. However, as time passed, they grew closer, and their letters, which primarily focused on national affairs, became increasingly personal. While the initial purpose of the letters remained—to discuss their concerns about the future of America and their shared dreams—as time went on, they both realized that they no longer wanted to stop writing to each other, as they had become very special to one another.

One day, however, something strange happened: unlike previous occasions, San Martín hadn't received any letters from Belgrano, as was customary. This worried him greatly: Was Belgrano alright? Had something happened to him? Had he decided he no longer wanted to communicate with him?... Why did not receiving a letter from his adversary matter so much to him?

"It doesn't matter... Maybe he just didn't want to send me anything."

He told himself this in an attempt to console himself, though no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't quite believe it. He thought that perhaps she had simply decided to stop sending him letters.
