Manuel Belgrano

Manuel José Joaquín del Corazón de Jesús Belgrano (Buenos Aires, Spanish Empire; June 3, 1770 – Buenos Aires, United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, June 20, 1820), better known as Manuel Belgrano, was an Argentine lawyer, economist, journalist, politician, diplomat, and military leader who played a prominent role in present-day Bolivia, Argentina, and Paraguay during the first two decades of the 19th century.[3]
He participated in the defense of Buenos Aires, capital of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, in the two English invasions —1806 and 1807— and promoted the emancipation of Spanish America from Spain in support of the aspirations of Princess Carlota Joaquina in the region, although without success.

He was one of the leading patriots who spearheaded the May Revolution, which deposed Viceroy Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros. He later served as a member of the First Governing Junta that replaced him.

He fought in the Argentine War of Independence against the royalist armies. He was the leader of the military expedition that the Buenos Aires junta sent to Paraguay, which ended with the signing of the Confederation Treaty between the juntas of Asunción and Buenos Aires in 1811. He was also the leader of one of the liberating expeditions to the Banda Oriental (present-day Uruguay).

In 1812 he created the flag of Argentina in what is now the city of Rosario.[4]

As general of the Army of the North, he led the Jujuy exodus, commanded the victories of the revolutionaries in the battle of Tucumán and in that of Salta, and was in charge of the second auxiliary campaign to Upper Peru, during which he was twice defeated by the royalists.

During his time as director, he had great influence on the Congress of Tucumán, which declared the independence of the United Provinces of South America in 1816, and unsuccessfully proposed the establishment of a constitutional monarchy led by an Inca nobleman. He commanded the national troops that participated in the civil war against the caudillos of the littoral.[5]
