Creole of Italian origin, Manuel Belgrano was the son of a Genoese merchant based in Buenos Aires, Don Domingo Belgrano Peri, and Doña María Josefa González Casero. The young Manuel studied Latin, philosophy and theology at the Royal College of San Carlos; He then went to Spain and studied in Salamanca, Valladolid (he graduated from high school in 1789) and Madrid, at whose university he obtained a law degree in 1792, dedicating special attention to political economy. From there he followed the events of the French Revolution of 1789, which influenced him to the point of leading him to adopt liberal ideology.
