*In those days when God was man's top priority, there were also demons—messengers from hell who came to ruin people's lives and lead them to sin. Only priests could kill them with a silver cross or holy water. People feared demons, avoided going outside in the evenings, and always tried to travel in pairs. Even though demons were exterminated, their numbers never diminished. These creatures constantly multiplied and grew quite quickly. At 15, a demon already looked like a 20-year-old human.* *Augustus was the high priest. Everyone trusted him, inviting him to all the celebrations held in the small village where he lived. He was only in his early thirties, but he had already assumed such a significant position in the church. He was an orphan and had initially been raised in the church under the protection of nuns. According to tradition, once a month the priest was supposed to bless the village's surroundings to make it more difficult for demons to pass through. This was the case this time. It was already getting dark when Augustus blessed the last house. After saying goodbye to the owners, he returned.

You became an honorary knight of the royal guard. At first, you patrolled the castle, then accompanied Augustus on trips, and after two years, you finally won his trust and became his personal knight, following him everywhere like a shadow. All this time, something was happening between you… Sparks flew—bright and quick, but noticeable to both of you. In public, only fleeting glances, filled with special meaning. It seemed you understood each other without words. And in private, conversations could last late into the night. Jokes, frank conversations, blurring the boundaries between your statuses. It was strange, but you both clearly enjoyed it.
Today, another ball was taking place in the imperial castle. Augustus sat majestically on his throne. You stood nearby, vigilantly guarding him. The moment for him to deliver the celebratory toast was approaching. His sky-blue eyes, cold and piercing like shards of winter ice, swept over the crowd. Unruly silver locks framed his finely detailed face. Augustus rose and walked to the marble railing, clearing his throat. Servants handed him a golden goblet filled with wine. He was about to begin his speech when you noticed movement in the corner of the room. An arrow! Instinctively, you lunged forward, shielding the emperor and grabbing his coat. A sharp, searing pain pierced your shoulder, causing you to groan. Hot blood gushed from the wound, staining his white uniform. A collective gasp erupted, and Augustus's eyes widened in surprise. The world went dark, and his knees weakened. The wine glass clattered to the floor, and Augustus's strong arms wrapped around your waist, keeping you from falling. His brow furrowed, and a loud, furious voice rang out, directed at the servants.
— Why are you standing there like statues?! Call a doctor immediately!
Lily.
You grew up in a loving, albeit poor, family: a father, mother, and an older brother. You weren't of noble birth, but you were respected. Your father had once served as the personal knight of the previous emperor and earned many awards for bravery. Your brother followed in his footsteps. They could train all day long, but there was one problem: your brother took after his mother. He was more drawn to science than war. He was quiet and, admittedly, timid. Your father couldn't accept this and, instead of sending him to a prestigious school, sent him to military academies. You, on the other hand, had no interest in studying at all. Military affairs, weapons, and battles always attracted your attention, but you, like your brother, were ignored and sent to a special school with a mathematical focus. However, immediately after the new decree was issued, you and your brother secretly conspired: he taught you about military science, and you shared the knowledge you had gained at the special school. Thus, you studied with each other for two years. And so the long-awaited day arrived: entering university and joining the royal guard. Unbeknownst to your parents, you had swapped places, and when they learned you'd joined the guard and your brother had entered the university, it was too late to change anything. Your father grumbled for a long time, but soon resigned himself, as did your mother.
From that moment on, you became an honorary knight of the royal guard.

August.
The Velaryon Empire... For decades, it has held primacy in economics, education, military affairs, and the arts—it seems there's no field where its genius hasn't shone. Who hasn't heard of the legendary Velaryon Royal Guard? Of the daring inventions that revolutionized the world, the flying ships and self-loading weapons? The Empire was proud of its rulers, each seemingly wiser and fairer than their predecessor. And just recently, the world stood still, watching the coronation of a new emperor. For the first time, the empire was led by such a young ruler—Augustus was only eighteen years old. But despite his youth, he already commanded respect across all strata of society. The new decree on recruitment into the Royal Guard was particularly exciting: now both men and women, regardless of background, could test their mettle. For many peasants and minor nobles, this was a true golden ticket, including you.
