Persona Attributes

Wizard artifacts

The magic shoes: A magic circle is drawn halfway under the right foot; the other half under the left. Simply join the two parts to float in the air. If you wear them for too long, your thighs become all flabby.
The Window-Portal: Linked to an exit located elsewhere, it allows for instantaneous movement. Its installation requires a very large and complex pentacle.
The Mortar: Made of ceramic, it is used to grind various ingredients which are added to ink to create complex spells.
Magic ink: It is made from blood-resin, a substance found in the branches of silver trees. Only this ink can activate spells.
The Resin Wand: Made from solidified blood-resin, it is suitable for drawing directly on plants and stones, but it is not used very much because its lines erase easily.
The Drawing Wand: This pen holder is primarily used for drawing pentacles. Its body is made of wood and its tip of metal. It can be decorated to one's liking, and the body can be sanded down for improved ergonomics.
The Circular Notebook: A small notebook that fits in the palm of your hand and allows you to draw pentacles. Refillable, you can add more sheets when they run out.

Wizarding Attire: Cloaks

A wizard's cloak allows them to conceal their hands when casting a spell in front of an uninformed person. It thus enables a wizard to perform magic without breaking the law and without revealing the secrets of magic to the uninitiated.
Kieffrey's Cape: Light grey with decorative gold buttons on the collar. Since Kieffrey hates the rain, the lining of his cape is magically treated to repel water.
Olugio's Cape: A deep midnight blue, it is sewn from a high-quality fabric, very soft to the touch. The fabric itself is quite heavy, which is why Olugio always has a slightly hunched back.
Kieffrey's Apprentice Cape: Bright turquoise, recognizable by its dark collar and large black buttons on the front. Made of thick fabric, it provides good protection against the cold. Brush-worm hairs cling to it easily.
Magic Militia Cape: This bright red cape symbolizes the plumage of Justice, a legendary bird said to appear in dreams. Split wide at the back to represent two wings, it serves as protection for the militia's knights and is equipped with defensive spells.
Tarta's Cloak: A very bright, soft green, its light and supple fabric allows Tarta to move freely while crafting magical supplies. Merchants of wizarding supplies get dirty easily and dislike cloaks that are too loose.
Anecdote: Wizards generally wear their cloaks when going out. They rarely wear them in their workshops.
Kieffrey removed the wide straps of his white tunic, which he wore over his long-sleeved black t-shirt, letting them fall to his hips as he got comfortable in his workshop. Olugio wore a white shirt with wide, puffy long sleeves under his cloak. Kieffrey also concealed an unsealed forgetfulness spell in the white lining at the front of his hat. He simply had to detach the lining and close the circle to cast the spell.

Wizard's Attire: Hat

Hat: The hat is a very important garment for a wizard. It distinguishes them from the ignorant. It is pointed. Members of the Brotherhood of the Hood wear wide-brimmed hats or masks to conceal their faces. The pointed hat is the symbol of wizards. During their apprenticeship, young students traditionally wear the hat of their workshop, but once they graduate, they are free to choose the design they like best.
Kieffrey's hat: Its basic shape is identical to that of his students, but the color of the fabric is different and instead of a pompom, it is decorated with a long black ribbon.
Coco, Tetia, Agathe and Trice's hat: This is the hat worn by Kieffrey's disciples. The white fabric at the front is fixed by a gold rivet and adorned with a pompom at the end.
Olugio's hat: The black fabric is enhanced by gold embroidery. The pompom at the top is similar to those worn by Kieffrey's apprentices, as he had exchanged them a long time ago.
Norse hat: It is sewn from a fairly soft fabric, which is why it tends to sag. The piece of fabric at the base is held in place by a metal ring.
Magic Militia Hat: A bright red fabric, a metal plate on the front, and two wing-shaped motifs on the sides. It is said to evoke a legendary bird, the bird of justice, which supposedly appears in the dreams of those who wish to fight evil.
Anecdote:
Tetia dreams of making her own hat when she becomes independent: a double-pointed hat that would represent her motto "A magic trick, a thank you, a second thank you in return and presto! Everyone is happy!"

Mr. Nornois

Mr. Nornois is a wizard working in the Starry Sword magical supplies shop with his grandson Tarta.
An old man with a bushy beard and mustache. He wears a double pair of glasses with triangular lenses that form a star when superimposed.
Warm and friendly, he speaks about his shop with passion and energy. He can be playful with people he knows well, but shows a very serious and dedicated side when faced with a serious problem.
Mr. Nornois and Kieffrey appear to be friends. Given that Kieffrey consults Mr. Nornois for his expertise on magical ink and other equipment, that Carn is the closest town to his workshop, and that they know each other well, Kieffrey is surely a loyal customer.

Cake

Tarta is Mr. Nornois' grandson. He works with him in the shop in Carn.
Tarta is a young boy with short, tousled red hair. He has grey eyes and fair skin. He wears a white shirt tied at the waist and brown trousers and shoes. His wizard's hat is green, topped with a small black pom-pom, and has a white, upturned brim, fastened with a tie held in front by a small ring. His cloak is the same green, with serrated edges at the bottom. It is a short cloak, a style often worn by craftsmen for its freedom of movement.
Deeply kind, he is a calm and caring boy who loves helping others and giving gifts to his loved ones. He is focused on his work and mature for his age. Tarta is very empathetic, able to understand the emotions of others and put himself in their shoes, no matter how serious the situation. Among other things, his disability will bring him closer to Kustas, who also has a different disability. It's a sensitive subject for him, and he gets upset quickly when others refuse to understand his situation. Tarta seems to get along very well with his grandfather. Initially distant with Coco when they first meet, they quickly become very close. Tarta is one of the few people to whom she willingly confides her past as a child with intellectual disabilities. He loves spending time with her and is often speechless when she gets too close. He is likely a little bit in love with her.

Members of the Brotherhood of the Hood

Egween: a mysterious sorcerer from the Brotherhood of the Hood who hides his face behind a mask. He is the one who gave Coco the magic book that will allow her to petrify her mother. He is the main antagonist, seeking to spread the use of forbidden spells by using Coco.
Concealing his face and almost his entire body beneath a mask and long robes, little is known of his true appearance, except that he is beardless with fair skin. He appears agile, whether seen crouching high above or flying, and sometimes strikes poses like a dancer. His mask resembles a giant eye from which hang fringes adorned with pearls, and a long ribbon trails from the end of his hat. His cape is trimmed with tassels, and his shoulders are covered with iridescent black bird feathers. Beneath, he wears high black trousers, shoes with upturned toes, and a rich doublet.
Egween is someone with nefarious intentions but playful, often seen smiling, even jubilated.

Members of the Magic Militia continued

Utwin: is a member of the magical militia. Skilled in combat, he is in charge of training their recruits. He comes from the north, where he knew Olugio as a child.
A young man of average height, recognizable by his unruly red hair, unshaven chin, and nonchalant attitude. He has fair skin and green eyes. He wears the short-haired uniform of the Magical Militia.
Compared to the other members of his team, he appears less serious, more relaxed, and almost insolent. Despite this, he takes his work seriously and obeys Ysheath. Behind his unusual attitude for a lawman, he proves to be efficient and intelligent, as when he tries to extract information from Olugio by taking him by surprise.

Members of the Magic Militia

Garga: One of the members of the Magical Militia, distinguished by his reliability and strength in combat. Tall and muscular with an angular face, he has white hair, dark at the temples and short on the sides, which he ties in a braid. He wears the Magical Militia uniform, which reaches his knees. He is one of, if not the, tallest characters in the series. Garga is serious but friendly, described as a good person by Lulucy. He knows how to gently restrain Echo and Etranne when they bicker. He is the only one in their squad who is in a relationship, which Lulucy attributes to his good nature. He takes his work very seriously and has difficulty taking vacations, much to his partner's dismay. He seems to be well-liked by all his colleagues.
Lulucy is a member of the Magical Militia. Before joining the militia, she was an ordinary witch apprentice, studying under another girl. After attacking their teacher for assaulting them, she was forced to leave her studies. One of the wizards who believed her testimony was Ysheath. Later, she would work for him in the militia. She is a petite blonde with blue eyes. She wears her long hair in a braided bun with bangs. She wears the Magical Militia uniform, cut long. At work, she is diligent and discreet, but doesn't hesitate to be strict when the situation demands it. Around her colleagues and outside of work, Lulucy is calm and friendly. Later, she tells Utwin, who is disgusted by his lack of popularity compared to Galga, that Galga is popular because of his kindness.
The only time we see Lulucy furious is when confronted by a voyeur. Having suffered sexual assaults from their teacher along with a friend, she has zero tolerance for perpetrators. She seems to enjoy playing with Pinpin, whom she takes charge of whenever the opportunity arises.

Ysheath

As vice-captain of the magic militia, he keeps a strict watch on Coco and Kieffrey, whom he suspects of being linked to the Brotherhood of the Hood.
He wears the Militia uniform, which is very long. He doesn't pay much attention to his appearance, and wears his hair tied back quickly, with strands falling all over his face. He has fair skin, straight black hair, and almost red eyes.
Strict, almost martial, enforcing the law is his sole priority. He doesn't hesitate to attack Agathe and Coco, even though they are children, nor to order his men to hunt down the latter. Ysheath is determined to investigate forbidden spells and capture the culprits, and seems to have no occupations outside of his work.

Tetia

One of Kieffrey's disciples with Coco, Agathe and Trice in the workshop.
Tetia is a girl with curly pink hair. She has pink eyes. She usually wears a white dress or the uniform of apprentice wizards and boots.
A cheerful and energetic young girl. She loves to be thanked, so she thanks in turn, and so on until her interlocutor decides to stop.
As an apprentice, she has mastered basic spells. She is particularly skilled in sand spells, such as sand flowers. Her childhood dream was to sleep on a floating cloud, and she is trying to create a spell that will allow her to fulfill this dream. As soon as it is perfect, she will patent it so that everyone can use it.

Agathe

One of Master Kieffrey's apprentices.
Kieffrey having taken Coco as a disciple, Agathe wants to get rid of her. To do so, she arranges for Coco to take an apprenticeship exam without Kieffrey's permission, but Coco passes. Agathe has short, curly black hair and violet eyes. She comes from a prominent family of wizards, which meant people tended to place a lot of hope in her and blamed her for every failure. Since then, she has always tried to surpass herself and puts considerable effort into her studies to live up to her prestigious lineage. But despite all this, in her desire to succeed too quickly, nothing she does seems sufficient to compensate for her "flaws," and she cannot be satisfied with her progress. Agathe is cold and very serious by nature. She hates people less gifted than herself because she believes she can learn nothing from them.

Trice

Her real name is Tricerite, and Trice is one of Master Kieffrey's four disciples.
Trice has long blue hair. Her eyes are the same color and, like Master Kieffrey's other disciples, she wears her apprentice witch outfit most of the time.
She is a rather unassuming but kind person. She is criticized for her stubbornness, wanting to use only her own spells without any desire to learn others. Later, it is revealed that her refusal to learn other magical techniques stems from her desire to remain true to herself, believing that copying spells already used by everyone else would make her seem like just another witch or wizard. Despite her expressionless and blasรฉ demeanor, she can be very emotional. She loves to eat, especially meat and cheese.

Coconut

Coco is a young girl fascinated by magic. She leads an ordinary life with her mother, a seamstress. One day, she discovers the secret of magic and accidentally uses a forbidden spell, transforming her mother and her home into crystals. Rescued by Kieffrey, she becomes his apprentice and vows to break the curse.
Her goal is the Library Tower, where she hopes to find the spellbook she used to cast the evil spell, in order to reverse its effects and save her mother.
Coco is a girl with blonde hair and green eyes. She wears a simple white dress when she is still working with her mother. After becoming Kieffrey's student, she wears the apprentice wizard's uniform, consisting of a white dress, a cape and a light blue hat, and brown leggings.
Coco is a lively and enthusiastic young girl. She studies magic fervently and, despite her lack of experience due to her recent discovery of the principles of magic, manages to brilliantly get her friends out of trouble thanks to her ingenious ideas.

She deeply loves magic. The spell that made her love magic was the one invented by Olugio, the workshop's sentinel, the one about the glittering paving stones that light up when you walk on them.

Coco's magic is often simple and practical, consisting of many straight lines and basic shapes. Her strength lies in developing spell ideas and concepts, which are often put into practice by her fellow apprentices.
Straight lines are his strength in magic.
Coco greatly appreciates her master and admires his talent. She loves his fun way of teaching her magic. She cares deeply for him. Tetia and Coco get along very well and even seem to be best friends. Agathe considers Coco her rival, but Coco likes her as a friend. Coco really likes Trice's magic, which she finds very beautiful. They get along well.

Olugio suite

Behind his gruff exterior, Olugio is a caring man. He is known for helping the ignorant in need and is well-liked by ordinary people. On the other hand, the noble clients who pay him for his inventions and demand mountains of work irritate him, as they underestimate the work involved. His kindness also extends to Kieffrey and his apprentices, for whom he invents the heating stone so they can sleep soundly. He doesn't readily admit his emotions and tries to present his acts of kindness as simply part of his job.

Olugio

Olugio is the sentinel of Kieffrey's workshop, but also his assessor and the intermediary between the Academy and his best friend's workshop.
He comes from a town in northern Zoza, where he was considered a brilliant child.
He is a young adult of about 25 years old, mostly wearing dark clothes, with black hair. He has an angular face with blue eyes, black hair adorned with bluish highlights, and also a goatee.
He dresses in dark clothing, mostly black. His usual outfit consists of a shirt, a belt with circular patterns on the front, and a long black skirt that reaches his ankles. His shoes are beige and appear to be quite high. Olugio wears a long black cape with a blue panel on the front featuring several buttons, lined with fabric of the same color, and a gold border. Three tassels adorn the front of his cape.
He wears a pointed black hat with gold trim and a small gold tassel attached to the end. Originally Kieffrey's hat, they exchanged tassels as a sign of friendship after completing the doorman's riddle.
Olugio is a grumpy and rather solitary person, even though, in truth, he gives very good advice. He spends most of his time locked in his workshop, working to meet deadlines and creating inventions for clients. He works late into the night, sleeps little, and is often found with dark circles under his eyes, or even sleeping on the workshop sofa in the middle of the day. He enjoys partying and drinking a lot, but doesn't handle alcohol well.
He never took the final exam of the Pentagram, claiming he didn't want apprentices, but he readily took on Kieffrey's apprentices when the situation required it. At first, he complained when they called him their master, but this faded over time.

Kieffrey

Kieffrey, a handsome young wizard of about 24, works in his own workshop. Along with his guardian and best friend, Olugio, he decides to take Coco as a disciple after she inadvertently imprisons his mother and his home in a crystal using a forbidden spell. Kieffrey also has three other disciples: Tetia, Trice, and Agathe.
Kieffrey is a young man with bushy, silvery-white hair, part of which obscures his right eye. He has blue eyes and a nose topped with a thin, small pair of oval glasses, the right lens tinted black. Friendly and protective, he is highly motivated to teach and ensure the safety of his students. He is gentle and smiling but hides a mysterious side. He speaks in a calm, soft voice but can also have a dark, icy glare if something or someone threatens to uncover one of his secrets, delve into his troubled past, or harm his students; he will protect them from any adversary.
He dislikes water, and it was this fear (along with his dislike of housework) that led him to train extensively in water spells. During his apprenticeship, he subjected himself to an iron discipline so he could easily analyze and find his enemy's weaknesses. He doesn't much care for the Academy (because he has bad memories of the place) or the actions of the Magic Militia, which is why his workshop is located far away in the mountains, in the rolling countryside near Carn.
He wears a white cape over a long white coat and a tight-fitting black long-sleeved t-shirt that reaches his neck. He wears soft brown/grey boots. His hat is pastel blue with a pointed brim at the front and a long black ribbon at the tip.

Day of the Conjuration

A historic event that laid the foundations of modern magical laws. The exact date of this day remains unknown.
History :
Historically, wizards had no laws governing magic. This led to abuses of power, such as the disfigurement of entire landscapes in the Surreal Mountains or the Slistas Forest, the human transformation of undesirable inhabitants of Romonon, and the use of powerful spells as weapons of war. Faced with the frequency of these magical acts, a group of wizards united to try to rid the world of harmful magic. They erased the memories of magic associated with those who disagreed with them, creating the first ignorant, and banned certain types of magic.
Among the forbidden magic was any spell cast upon the human body. This was deemed unacceptable by the sorcerer-physicians, whose profession was becoming impossible, and who opposed the new laws. They were the last and most tenacious of the opponents to the new order.
Aftermath:

  • The Brotherhood of the Hood was formed after the Day of the Conspiracy, bringing together all those opposed to the new laws.
  • The Magic Militia was created to enforce the laws surrounding magic.
  • Medical magic became a partially lost art.

Silver Night Festival

An annual festival is celebrated in Esrest, where the wizards of Zoza gather to display their magic. The festival is celebrated together by both the ignorant and the wizards.
The festival lasts four days, from November 3rd to 6th. Its beginning is marked by a meteor shower, and it ends on the so-called Silver Night. The festival is a gigantic market for magical items. To set up shop, wizards must reserve a spot for their tent before the festival, the precise location of which is chosen by lot: some spots being much more advantageous than others in terms of the number of visitors who pass through. A few days before the festival, the Three Wise Men meet at Essest Castle with the kings of the peninsula to discuss the relations between wizards and non-wizards.
First day:
A parade opens the festival. The King of Essest passes by, followed by the knights of the Magic Militia, who dance with their silver ribbons.
Silver Night:
On the final day of the festival, wizards parade to display their artifacts, which they then sell in a pavilion next to the castle. This is an important event attended by dignitaries such as the king himself and booksellers from the Library Tower. Artifacts sold that night must be approved beforehand by the Sage of Friendship. This is one of the few occasions a wizard can meet the king of the island-city in person.

Tests of the Pentagram

The trials of the Pentagram are five in number, and they structure the learning of wizards, who must pass them in order to complete their studies.
1 - The King's Permission: This first test is taken by young wizards to enter a workshop. It consists of gathering a crowned weed in the Surreal Mountains, using the magical tools of their choice. This test can only be taken once, condemning those who fail to never become wizards. Once the test is passed, one becomes an apprentice and can begin studying with the master of their choice.
2 - The Knight's Devotion: This takes place at Cape Romonon, in the Serpent's Cave, which the apprentices must cross while escorting baby merfolk. This trial can therefore only be held once a year during the migration season of the young of this species. To avoid frightening the animals, the apprentices wear cloaks that camouflage their human appearance. This trial simulates services rendered to the ignorant, who are forbidden from showing the drawings of spells, forcing the wizards to draw incognito under their cloaks. This represents considerable training for the apprentices, whom the trial helps to test. Once the trial is passed, the apprentices earn the right to cast spells in public.
3 - The Gatekeeper's Riddle: The test that grants access to the Library Tower.
4 - The Queen's Blessing: The final test that apprentices must complete before being officially considered wizards. After completing the Queen's Blessing, wizards earn the right to abandon their master's uniforms for their own attire.
5 - The Teaching of the Sages: The fifth test of the Pentagram, which wizards must pass before they can take on their own apprentices.
Among wizards, the student chooses his master, not the other way around.

Magic: Artifacts continued

Silver Ribbon: The weapon of the knights of the Magic Militia. A silver spear that ends in the shape of a triangular "flag", from which hangs a long ribbon that ends in a metal point. The ribbon is extendable, and is used to wrap things and people, and is most often used as a link to immobilize and/or capture criminals. It is the weapon that all knights use. They are trained in it as part of their training. Even without magic, it is an effective and formidable weapon. Knights also use it to dance during their demonstration before Silver Night.
Slice Sword: A bewitched sword that can be used to slice through any liquid, used by Kieffrey. A sword whose blade is covered with small engraved pentacles, bound together, that repel water. Its hilt is made of suspended water.

Magic: Artifacts continued

Suspended drop: An artifact that extracts clean, drinkable water from the air. Very common among sorcerers, it is not so among the ignorant. Consists of two metal bowls, the bottom one with a small spout and the top one with a ring that allows you to hold the object or hang it. When deactivated, the two parts are glued to each other. Opening them activates the drop: a spell engraved on the bottom bowl generates a circular drop of water that floats between the two parts and can be moved with the object. To help yourself, you run the water by tilting the bowl with the spout towards it.
Makeup mask: The makeup mask is an artifact that gives the wearer a "neat look and a radiant complexion". A mask with a spell inscribed on its forehead, which activates when the mask is attached. Once the spell is activated, the mask itself becomes invisible. Olugio occasionally uses it outside the workshop when it is exhausted and looks gloomy.
Miniature Set: A small box equipped with a shrink spell, designed to hold clothes. It is a small wooden box with a glass back that fits in the hand, and the lid separates in two. Inside the lid is inscribed a shrink spell - once the lid is opened, it breaks, returning the outfit in the box to its original size. These artifacts are produced by the Academy, which collects and redistributes old refurbished clothes. Outfits shrunk in this way can be traded and collected.
Warming stone: A creation by Olugio that emits a gentle heat. A flat stone, which appears to be a slice of a larger mineral, the size of a hand, on which a pentacle is drawn. It emits a pleasant warmth, and helps to sleep comfortably.

Magic: Artifacts continued

Flying shoes: Shoes whose undersoles are bewitched to allow the wearer to fly. The spell under the shoes is separated into two equal parts: to activate the magic, you just have to join your feet. Some models have two pentacles: the first, larger, on the fat of the foot, and the second smaller on the heel. On other models, such as Agathe's, only one large pentacle in the center is present.
The flying technique takes a little time to master. Flying horizontally is tiring, so wizards prefer to fly diagonally. There is a height limit above which it is no longer possible to fly.
Portal window: The portal window is a type of artifact that is used for transport, allowing you to teleport who and what cross it, from one point to another. When activated, the spell resembles a simple round opening to the other portal, which disappears when the spell is deactivated. A portal window can be uni- or bi-directional.
Carn Ferry:
A boat used by the sorcerers of Carn to travel to their island. It is propelled by a spell. A large sailing boat, but without oars. At its bow, a large wooden disc decorated with a pentacle is used to propel the boat. The emblem of the pentacle is not discernible. Curiously, its captain seems to be ignorant. Twin
Vials: A type of artifact that binds two containers together, allowing one to fill the other from a distance. Of ancient origin, it was designed before the Day of Conjuration for medical purposes, allowing healing potions to be easily sent to doctors who needed them for their patients. This spell was lost, erased from the world's memories along with the rest of medical magic, making the twin vials a very rare and forbidden artifact. The two paired containers each contain an identical medal with a spell engraved on it.

Magic: Artifacts

Enchanted Items are called artifacts. They are very popular because anyone can activate them, not just wizards. However, only wizards are able to craft them, making them valuable items. It is forbidden to craft an artifact until you have passed the exam and been officially accepted as a disciple.
There are many artifacts in the world, such as flying shoes, tiles that light up when you step on them, and heating stones.

Washing barrels: An artifact that takes the form of a wooden barrel with a lid that is used to wash laundry. The inside of the barrel is inscribed with a repeat pentacle that restores the linen to its original appearance, not only removing dirt, but also repairing any damage.
Reflective Mirror Cloak: An artifact that reflects an illusion, disguising its wearer as the nearest creature. A cloak made of the skin of a scaly wolf, inside which a spell is inscribed. The cloak activates when it is worn. The illusion is not perfect - notably, the image reflected back from the wearer is the same size as him, regardless of the creature it imitates. Some attributes can also appear through the illusion, such as certain clothes. However, this is enough to deceive the animals. This cloak is used in the Knight's Devotee test, to be able to escort young merffons without frightening them. Winged
Carriage: Vehicles used by wealthy inhabitants of large cities to get around. They are pulled by winged horses and fly thanks to a spell. Rounded in shape, they appear to be built as small buildings with a tiled roof, a freestone foundation, and large windows. They have only a pair of wheels at the front, the rear being carried by a spell inscribed on a large circular plaque.

Magic: Spell Continuation

Narrowing:
A type of spell that shrinks the size of the object it is cast on. These spells are not defined by a central emblem but by shrink arrows. There are four of these arrows arranged in a cross.
Luminous Bird Signal: The luminous bird signal is a light spell used to create a flying, luminous bird. The luminous bird signal contains a light emblem in the center, a scatter arrow on one side, and a bird arrow on the other three. The spell creates a bird made of light that will fly around the pentacle for a period of time. This can be used to entertain, call for help, or create a distraction.
Repel Wild Beasts: The Repel Wild Beasts spell is a hybrid spell used to drive away animals. The spell contains a central emblem, currently unknown, and emblems of light on either side. An unidentified symbol is located above and below the central emblem, and column arrows are visible in the spaces between the emblems of light and this symbol. As the name suggests, this spell is used to repel wild beasts, though it is not entirely clear how (through scent, noise, or light). However, it is most likely through light, given that the spell contains emblems of light.
Wizards use this spell in animal watchtowers located near villages and roads. This makes these areas safer for both the ignorant and the wizards.
Forget: This spell is often used by the Militia to erase the memories of an ignorant person who has unlocked the secrets of magic or of a sorcerer who has broken the law.
Time Rewind: A type of spell that reverses the time of the object or entity on which the spell is cast, negating any damage caused.

Magic: Spell Continuation

Flying Shoes (spell): A spell placed under the soles of flying shoes. A special wind emblem, surrounded by a circle of column and alternating convergence arrows. This spell levitates if you stand on it when activated. Water
Dagger:
This spell generates a short blade made of water.
In the center of the spell, a water emblem serves as a base, its shape channeled by a scatter arrow surrounded by two column arrows. The emblem is framed by two unknown signs, and underneath, there is a last mysterious sign in the shape of a triangle, crossed by a line.
Disintegration: Allows you to dig a hole in a wall or in the rock. An emblem of the earth surrounded by a pair of column arrows, and a pair of desingregation arrows. It digs a circular hole in the direction in which it is placed by disintegrating the material.
Portal Window (spell): A type of spell that operates portal windows, of which there are many variations. With no apparent emblem, the basic pentacle is formed by two concentric rings of symbols, an outer one with zigzags, and an inner one with simple arrows. Each portal window has a spell of its own. The addition of other symbols could be an indication of the portal's destination.
Campfire Circle: The Campfire Circle is a fire spell that allows you to create a levitating fireball. The pentacle contains a central fire emblem surrounded by levitating arrows. The spell produces a fireball that levitates and levitates any object of a certain weight placed above it.
Floating Lamp: Spell used to light a magic light. An emblem of light surrounded by four column arrows and four floating arrows.
Scouting: Used by the Magic Militia, it allows you to locate precious artifacts to prevent them from being sold at high prices on the black market but also for surveillance purposes.

Magic: Spell

Wind Shield: A spell invented by Alyra that creates a circular wind barrier around her target. A large wind emblem. On one side of the spell, it is surrounded by a semicircle of two rows of convergence arrows pointing inwards; on the other, a row of column arrows pointing outwards. An unknown symbol delimits the latter from the emblem. Winged
Carriage (spell): A spell that allows winged carriages to fly through the air. The spell is only used as levitation, since winged horses pull the carriage. It is located under the carriage. Contains several emblems similar but not identical to the wind emblem, as well as a huge number of arrows from the column, including a complete circle in the pentacle, and several others arranged around the central emblems. A second circle of unknown arrows in the shape of a comma is concentric to the circle of arrows in the column. These "commas" are found in the central emblems.
Circle of Rain: The circle of rain is a spell that generates rain. The pentacle of the circle of rain includes a central emblem of water, all surrounded by a sign of rain. When drawn, this pentacle creates a rain shower.
Circle of Repeat:
Circles of Repeating are particular pentacles that can come in many variations. They have the property of turning the things on which they are applied to their original shape. There are many kinds of circles of repetition, each different from the last. But these circles all have in common a symbol of repetition as their main basis. Most of the time the spell causes the object on which it is used to become "like new". For example, if a repeat circle is used on spoiled meat, it would become fresh again and therefore edible. This is also the type of spell that is used in washing barrels: dirty or worn clothes are put in them.

Fauna and Flora continued

Brush worm:
The brushworm is a small, fluffy creature with a long tail. It feeds on fruit and nuts and is naturally attracted to the scent of magical ink, in which it likes to roll. Pinpin, the brushworm in Kieffrey's workshop, is white, but this is not the case for all brushworms, which display several other colors and can even be striped. The brushworm is born almost round, and its tail grows longer with age.

Fauna and Flora continued

Merffon:
The merffon is a semi-aquatic species of griffin. They are used in the second of the Pentagram trials, where apprentice wizards must guide their young through the Serpent's Cave without frightening them. The merffon is flightless. It has four webbed feet and a pair of flipper-like wings. It nests on the cliffs of Cape Romonon. It is fierce and dislikes the presence of humans. The merffon's appearance is largely based on various penguin species.
Lake Monster:
The Lake Monster is a gigantic, sea-serpent-like creature that guards the Library Tower, attacking anyone who tries to fly over the lake surrounding it. Several members of the species live in the lake. The monster has an elongated body covered in scales, round on its back and sides and elongated on its belly. Along its back is a row of small flippers, and its tail is adorned with three larger caudal fins. The most recognizable part of the animal is its head, which has eight large, arachnid-like, bulging eyes, and a vertical mouth around which six jointed legs open, connected by a membrane.
Wild apple:
A shrub that produces edible fruit. A small shrub with smooth, elongated leaves. It seems to grow on rocky, rugged terrain. Its fruit resembles a large pear. When ripe, it can be yellow or redโ€”the yellow fruits are edible, but the red ones are not.
Shell potatoes:
An edible root of a plant surrounded by a tough skin. Before it can be eaten, it must be cooked for a long time, otherwise it is very tough. One way to cook it is to roast it whole over a flame.

Fauna and Flora continued

Spotted Gray Dragons continued:
However, spotted gray dragons have been known to fly through the skies of the Narkiwan Hills at night, especially during the shooting star season that marks the arrival of Silver Night.
Eye Leaf:
An herb commonly used in medicine for its pain-relieving properties.
Description:
A medium-sized bush with pointed leaves that curl upwards.
Use:
The Spotted Leaf is a very versatile medicinal plant, which helps to reduce pain.
Firework Flower:
An inedible plant used in herbalism.
Description:
Has long, pointed leaves and a ball-shaped flower with thin petals, of two different lengths: the first shorter forming a bushy ball and the second long and flexible, ending in a small ball that makes them fall.
Cat Huants:
Cat Huants are half-cat, half-owl creatures that roam freely on the island city of Esrest.
Description:
Cat hoots look like cats, but they have owl-like beaks and wings. Their four legs look like birds' feet, and their ears are reminiscent of feather egrets.
Scaly Wolf:
A species of wolf from the Zoza Peninsula. As their name suggests, they are covered in scales.
Description
The back and flanks of the scaly wolf are covered with sharp scales made of fur that protect the animal. To avoid hurting their young, they run side by side, bumping into each other to tear off the scales. This behavior indicates the beginning of the mating season.
Crowned Weed:
The Crowned Weed is a plant that grows in the heights of the Surrealist Mountains. Its name comes from the shape of its flower, which resembles a crown.
The spoon of this flower is the purpose of the first of the Pentagram trials, as a punishment for the king who once returned the mountains to their current state.

Fauna and Flora continued

Winged horse description continued:
Description:
Experts do not know whether to classify them as a four-legged or eight-legged animal. They are slower than normal horses, and their hooves are fragile and can be damaged if they land on ground that is too hard.
Checkerboard:
An edible plant used in herbalism. It sells for a very high price. A plant with leaves with notched edges, which bears spikes of black and white seeds.
Dragons:
Dragon is a term used to classify a number of varieties of large beasts with scales and two pairs of wings and legs, thus totaling 8 limbs. There are carnivores and herbivores. Generally, dragons are very resistant to fire and are considered extremely dangerous, even to wizards. Dragons are territorial animals, which do not approach human habitations. They are prized as hunting trophies, hunting that is regulated to avoid endangering species.
Large Scaly Dragons:
These dragons are almost impossible to find near places inhabited by humans. Very territorial, they attack at the slightest intrusion, using their long tails as a whip. They know how to glide and have good resistance to fire. Despite the danger they represent, their scales and eggshells are very popular with wizards who use them as the basis for several magical dyes.
Spotted Gray Dragons:
More common than the scaly species, Spotted Gray Dragons live much closer to the places where humans live than humans. They are often seen flying in schools and it is therefore possible that this species is at least moderately sociable. It also appears to be nocturnal or early morning (especially active at night and at dawn) but there is little evidence to support this.

Fauna and Flora

Rain bee: An insect whose nests are used as ingredients for making medicines. Their nests have a spiral, conical shape.
Silver Tree: A rare species of tree, whose sap is the basis of magic ink. In good health, its branches have a silvery appearance, but when sick, they turn black. These black branches are dangerous for the health of the tree. The poison obtained from their refining is used to make magic ink. The silver tree is precious to wizards and surrounded by several myths and legends. The legend of the creation of magic states that the tree fell in love with a star that fell between its branches, which gave the young woman her powers. Because of the love she had for the world, the damsel of the tree shared these powers with humans, giving birth to sorcerers. The symbols of the tree and the star are regularly found in wizarding society. Silver trees are said to choose themselves where they grow.
Magic use:
Magic ink, the basic ingredient for casting spells, is made from the sap of the branches of this tree. From the diseased branches a black substance called blood-resin is extracted, which is then refined. Blood-resin is used to make certain wands.
Large, elegant cats, seen in the company of King Dinlerdy. Sand-colored, with white bellies and legs. They are large, slender, slender cats whose ears and lips end in long, bushy-tipped goatees, giving them their name. Their tails and ears are surprisingly long and dark in color. Orugio likes them very much.
Winged horse:
Animals used by the wealthy to pull winged carriages.
Description
Resemble horses but carry two pairs of wings in addition to their two pairs of legs, which attach where the ears of a normal horse would be, and in place of the tail.

Library Tower:
The Library Tower is a gigantic tower located in the middle of a lake on the Zoza Peninsula, the exact location of which is unknown.
Description:
This magic tower records everything written in the world. It is guarded by a gigantic snake, which lives in the lake around it and attacks anyone who tries to get there. It is the place of the third of the Pentagram trials. The tower is also guarded by four booksellers, including Agathe's mother.
Coco wants to go there in the hope of finding the magic book that Egween gave her when she was little, in order to find the spell that petrified her mother to save her.

Description Surrealist Mountains continued:
The height of these mountains varies between the spheres but also according to the time of year. When these spheres reach their maximum altitude they can reach the top of the clouds and the lowest spheres can be immersed in the water of the lake.
These Mountains were created after a king ordered the mountains to be lifted into the sky, so that nothing would be higher than him.
Anecdotes:

  • In the original version and in the English translation, the Mountains are called (lit) Mountains of Dada(h). The French translation linked the term to its artistic definition, according to movement.
  • This is where Coco will meet Pinpin the Brush Worm.
    Romonon :
An ancient underground city on the Zoza Peninsula, now abandoned, led to its doom by its own inhabitants.
    Description :
Romonon is located on the cape of the same name, in the Cave of the Serpent. It is a gigantic city built entirely in the cave.
The city has a gigantic construction that serves to amplify the spells placed in its center. This kind of artifact was used as a weapon of war.
    History:
Long ago, before the Day of the Conjuration, it was inhabited by a wealthy people known for their goldsmiths. Isolationists and proud, they magically made the path to their city winding and dangerous to ensure that only those who deserve it passed.
The discrimination caused by this meritocratic ideology spread to their own people, and the inhabitants began to punish each other, condemning their cripples, their weaklings, the foreigners and the elders, and all those deemed imperfect to be turned into golden statues. Eventually, society collapsed and the city ended up abandoned and in ruins. Those who had been turned into gold, having become immortal, continue to haunt the corridors and maintain a fierce hatred for sorcerers.

Important Places continued

The Serpent's Cave continued:
You can also be disqualified if the Merffon has not followed you to the exit.
If you pass the test, casting spells in front of the ignorant is allowed.
Silver Garden:
A garden of silver trees located in the heart of the Academy. The garden, like the rest of the Academy, is underwater and consists of a huge room, large enough to grow several gigantic trees. The ground is wet and dotted with small islands of grass and sand between the huge tree roots.
The Starsword :
A wizarding supply shop owned by Mr. Nornois, where he works alongside Tarta. It sells all kinds of things, such as magic inks, potions, accessories and writing objects. A silver tree grows in its center.
Description
The shop is located on a steep street in Carn. Its front door disappears when the shop is closed, and its owners have keys, magic door handles that give access to the room of their choice. There are three main rooms: the shop, the back room and a floor. Upstairs is the Mr. Nornois office which overlooks the branches of the tree. The back room is full of drawers and shelves where ingredients and other supplies are stored. Surrealist
Mountains:
The Surrealist Mountains are a mountain range, once disfigured by powerful magic. It is the place of the first test that the sorcerer's apprentices must undertake, where the apprentices must succeed in picking a plant called "Crowned Weed" that grows at its peaks. It is considered a very dangerous place for new witches.
Description:
Each of these mountains is a sphere of land floating in the air. They are covered with vegetation. Gravity seems to affect objects as well as animals.

Important Places continued

Places in Esrest suite:
Central square: square located in front of the castle gates. Privileged location for the Silver Night stalls.
Mud Puddles: Slum located upstream of the city's sewer outlets.
Narkiwan Hills:
The Narwikan Hills are located in the east of the Zoza Peninsula, next to the town of Carn. This windy region extends to the coast of the peninsula and is characterized by its hills, which gave it its name. The area is rocky and dotted with small trees, some of which produce wild apples. It is crossed by many species such as scaly wolves, funerary foxes and fringed mice. During the shooting star season, the area is flown over by spotted grey dragons. This is where Coco's village can be found, as well as Kieffrey's workshop.
Notable Places:
Kieffrey's Workshop:
A two-story workshop run by Kieffrey, who is its teacher, and Olugio, his sentinel. It also serves as the home of the four apprentices Coco, Agathe, Tetia and Trice as well as Pinpin, the brushworm found by Coco. Coco's
Village:
This is a small rural hamlet nestled at the foot of a mountain. It is inhabited entirely by ignorant people.
Serpent's Cave:
Romonon's Cave, a remnant of the time before the day of the Conjuration, has been designated as the location for the second Sorcerer training test.
It is located in the Zoza Peninsula, on the Romonon Cape. The Romonon Cave is currently used by Sorcerers to pass the second test called, "The Knight's Dedication". This test consists of crossing the snake's path with a Merffon using spells. Indeed, the floor of the path is made up of stone scales on which are drawn pentacles of gravity (unknown). If one deviates from the path, gravity no longer makes sense and the test has failed.

Important Places continued

Romonon's Cape:
A narrow peninsula to the northeast of the Zoza Peninsula and the site of the ancient city of the same name.
Places:
Romonon:
An ancient city submerged underground. Centuries ago, it was a prosperous city, whose proud, isolationist inhabitants eventually mutilated each other, turning those deemed "inferior" into statues of solid gold, until their society collapsed. The ancient inhabitants of Romonon, thus bewitched, still haunt its ruins.
Serpent Cave:
The Serpent's Cave leads to the ruins of Romonon. Its name comes from the gigantic snake-shaped stone road that runs through it, whose mouth is the entrance, and the cobblestones the scales. The interior of this cave is labyrintic, its space twisted by ancient magic. This is where the second test of the Pentagram takes place.
Carn: This is a small town closest to Kieffrey's workshop. Most of the sorcerers of the region have taken up residence there.
Description:
The city is divided into two: one side for sorcerers and the other for the ignorant. The sorcerers live on an island joined by a ferry forbidden to the ignorant.
It is located next to the muddy forest, it was built in the middle of the river to protect the dwellings from the snakes that live in the forest. It has a guard tower also built by the sorcerers and no bridge joins it.
The streets of Carn are particularly steep, often comprised of stairs, slopes and deep gutters, and cobblestones. These make them slippery and difficult to navigate.
Locations in Carn:

  • The Starry Sword: The shop run by Mr. Nornois and his grandson Tarta.
  • Carn's Hospital.
    Esrest:
The Isle City of Esrest is the political capital of the Zoza Peninsula, and the seat of the King's Castle. This is where the Silver Night Festival takes place.
    Locations:
-Castle: The residence of the King of Esrest. A powerful spell envelops the building, rendering all other magic useless.

Important Places

The Academy: it is a fortified underwater citadel in which the majority of Zoza's wizards live.
It is maintained with the help of the magic tax imposed on the ignorant by the king of the peninsula.
Places :

  • Entrance: located on an isolated rocky peak near Cap de Romonon, it is accessed via a gate. Spiral stairs descend to the bottom of the water.
  • Silver Garden
  • Clinic: run by Sinocia and a few doctors, who are the only ignorant people in the citadel.
The lost island of Adanly: is an isolated island where wizards who have lost their memories are sent into exile, in order to accustom them to a life of ignorance. Once they have recovered, they can return to the outside world, but they do not regain their magic.
    Kieffrey's workshop:
Kieffrey's wizard workshop, where he teaches magic to his apprentices, is located in a remote area of โ€‹โ€‹the Narkiwan hills, near the city of Carn. Kieffrey chose this location because he wanted a workshop far from the Academy. He lives there with his apprentices and his best friend.
    Description :
A stone building in two parts, linked by a raised corridor. The first part contains the workshop's living spaces: a lounge, kitchen, and bathroom. Upstairs, the girls have their own bedroom, as well as an office shared between them. Attached to the lounge, a large stone fireplace serves as a place for testing spells. On the other side of the corridor is Olugio's workbench, where he sometimes sleeps. It's a large room: the ground floor houses tools and artifacts, and a small raised area serves as his office and nap room.
The workshop also includes a room with a wide gate.
    Anecdotes:
The chimney is a relic from an earlier version of the story, where wizards each had one of these tall structures attached to their workshop, giving wizard towns a funny, tower-like appearance.
Until Coco arrived, Agathe had the office all to herself.

Factions continued

The Magic Militia continued:
They also hunt down sorcerers involved in the practice of illegal spells. The Knights of the Magic Militia erase the memories of those who discover the secret of magic as well as that of sorcerers who break the rules by using forbidden spells or other forbidden magical practices. Their role is crucial in maintaining order and confidentiality around magical practice.
Ignorant:
The term ignorant refers to those who do not practice magic and are unaware that it can be learned. Ignorant people perceive themselves as distinct from sorcerers, a difference reinforced by the latter to preserve the secret of magic. Sorcerers, although they provide their help for free, receive in exchange a tax from the ignorant to support their practice. The nature of the relationship between wizards and ignorant people depends largely on the individual commitment of the wizards, but in general, the ignorant show great respect for those who assist them, admiring their powers. Some ignorant children dream of becoming witch doctors, a wish often considered unattainable in their society. However, there are exceptional cases, such as that of Coco, a child born ignorant who discovered the secret of magic and eventually became a witch.

Factions continued

The Brotherhood of the Hood continued:
Groups and their goals:
Egween and his group seem to want to upside down the established order. Egween sold Coco the book of spells that would make her cast her first spell, before petrifying her mother. He tries several times to make her cast forbidden spells again, by force, and in front of her comrades. The only sorcerer known to him so far is Sasaran.
Ininia considers the Brotherhood to be the only "true sorcerers", implying that sorcerers who comply with the laws prohibiting medical magic do not help the citizens.
A group of unknown sorcerers have kidnapped and mutilated the young Kieffrey for their research, leaving him for dead buried after clearing his memory.
The Three Sages: They are powerful sorcerers at the head of their society. Each of the Three Wise Scholars represents the same specific role - it is a position as well as a title. The three roles are:
The Sage of Teaching, who is in charge of researching, educating the apprentices, overseeing the organization of their trials, and listening to sorcerers
The Sage of Friendship, who is in charge of diplomatic relations with the outside world, political negotiations with ignorant rulers, and approving the sale of artifacts in certain situations
The Sage of the Law, who is the head of the Sorcerers' Laws and the supreme authority of the Magic Militia.
Known Sages:
In their order of appearance, the known Sages of the series are:
Berdalute, Sage of the Vinanna Teaching
, Sage of the Law
, Engendil, Former Sage of Friendship
, Rahgra, new Sage of Friendship.
The Magic Militia:
The Knights of the Magic Militia, often referred to simply as the Magic Militia, are an order of wizards responsible for enforcing the laws established on the Day of Conjuration. Their main mission is to monitor and enforce the regulations regarding magic. They are dedicated to hunting down members of the Brotherhood of the Hood.

Factions continued

Magical Laws continued:
Sorcerers are not allowed to intervene in the case of disasters that are not of natural origin, such as wars.
Sorcerers must not pledge any political allegiance.

Sorcerers must never hide their faces.
Any workshop built away from major cities must have a sentry who is instructed to keep an eye for abuse, and to report any problems to the Magic Militia.
If a sorcerer uses forbidden magic or harms others with their magic, the Magic Militia will erase all memory related to magic.
The Brotherhood of the Hood: This includes outlaw sorcerers, who practice forbidden spells such as magic applied to the human body, transformation, or necromancy. Some, such as Egween and Ininia, still break the laws of sorcerers by teaching ignorant people to become sorcerers. Unlike legal sorcerers, who are forced to wear brimmed hats to obscure their faces, the hats of the Brotherhood's sorcerers can take any form, and many of them wear masks or hats with large brims.
Despite the name "Brotherhood", these members do not seem to obey a supreme leader. Egween is an authority figure, but it is not yet confirmed whether there are any Brotherhood sorcerers of higher rank than him, or whether it has ranks at all - possibly groups and individuals with no connection other than their rejection of the law, each for their own reasons.
History:
The Brotherhood was formed after the Day of the Conspiracy, sorcerers resisting the new laws put in place. Forced to live in the shadows to escape the Militia Knights, they have had a more or less strong presence, known to the Militia, since - being more active in some periods than others.

Factions continued

Wizards Training:
Wizards begin their apprenticeship in magic around the age of 7-10, at which age they enter a workshop under a master. The student chooses his master and not contradicts him. Prized masters are the descendants of the original sorcerers of the Day of Conjuration. Five tests are passed in a row during the training, of which from the third onwards, one is considered a real sorcerer. From this moment on, the sorcerer must complete at least three public works per season.
Outfit:
The sorcerer's outfit is regulated and includes a pointed hat and a cape. The hat is the emblem of the sorcerer and must not have a brim or anything that can hide or obscure the face. Apprentices must wear a hat that is uniform from their workshop, until their third test, from which each wizard has the right to create his own design. The wizard's cloak should be long enough to cover the hands, so that spells can be drawn hidden underneath when in the presence of ignorant people without attracting attention. Workshop uniforms also include a cloak. Some cloaks have very specific uses - craftsmen, for example, prefer short, light cloaks that are more practical and comfortable. Kieffrey, on the other hand, wears an enchanted cloak that repels water, hating being wet.
Magical laws:
These regulate the use of magic and the existence of wizards.
It is strictly forbidden to use spells on the human body or mind, with the exception of spells to erase memories.
Magic must remain a secret. Wizards must not be seen drawing spells by ignorant people, and spells on artifacts must be camouflaged.
It is forbidden to use magic for purposes harmful to the well-being of others.
Sorcerers are not allowed to study anything related to medicine.

Factions

Sorcerers:
Sorcerers are those who use magic. They do not belong to any nation, pay no rent, and are paid by a magical tax levied on the ignorant, in exchange for which they are obligated to serve the people. One is born a sorcerer, one does not become one - while magic can actually be used by anyone, sorcerers have fiercely kept it a secret since the day of the Conjuration. Sorcerers are ruled by the Three Sages and a series of magic laws, governed by the Magic Militia. A large majority of the sorcerers of Zoza live in the Academy, a fortified city that belongs to them. Forced to live apart from the ignorant, small communities of sorcerers nevertheless exist, such as the one on the Isle of Carn. Others, rarer, like Kieffrey, prefer to live alone, and still others are nomadic.
History:
Before the Day of the Conjuration, the term "sorcerer" came to all those who used magic, which was then freely accessible. It was common for kings to have a sorcerer in their service. The exploits of the sorcerers of this time are described in tales and legends. On the Day of the Conjuration, it was decided by a small committee of wizards to put an end to the many atrocities caused by magic. This group set about erasing the memories of magic from the spirits of all the wizards they did not trust, deciding to teach magic only to a small number of apprentices. All spells on the human body, any mixture of magic and medicine, and all harmful magic were banned. The opponents of these new rules who escaped with their memories formed the Brotherhood of the Hood. This new order and these laws are still in force.

Universe

This RPG takes place in the universe of the work Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama.

In this world, magic is a mysterious force filling this world that only sorcerers know how to use. A spell does not cast strictly speaking, it is drawn. Indeed, spells correspond to simple pentacles that can be drawn on various supports (paper, fabric, stone,...). However, for magic to work, spells require the use of a special ink with magical properties. In the past, the practice of magic was common and within everyone's reach. Unfortunately, humans used it for anything and everything and created frightening and dangerous spells; many wars resulted from its use. Thus, to put an end to the madness of men, a group of people gathered to form a peaceful league, that of the sorcerers. They stole all knowledge of magic from ordinary men and passed on their knowledge only to hand-picked disciples (an event known as the "day of the conjuration").
Since then, humans have believed that magic is only accessible to a handful of individuals: sorcerers. Since the day of the conjuration, all forbidden spells, i.e. spells that violate a person's integrity (physical transformation, teleportation without a portal, manipulation of the mind or feelings, wound or healing spells, etc.) have been banned and their use is strictly forbidden. Thus, it is forbidden to draw a spell on the body of a living being.
However, the same is not true for objects that can be enchanted to make artifacts. These objects crafted by wizards are particularly sought after because they can be used by mages as well as simple humans.
For a spell to activate, the circle around the symbols must be completely closed.
