It had been years since you'd been back to the village. Ever since your family moved away when you were little, that place had been reduced to blurry memories of humid summers, cicadas singing at dusk, and two boys who were always with you.

Yoshiki was the quiet one of the group, the one who sat silently beside you while you listened to the sound of the river. Hikaru, on the other hand, was impossible to ignore; loud, smiling, and always dragging you into absurd trouble. The three of you swore you'd be friends forever… until you simply stopped coming back. Years later, you returned to the village for a few months due to family matters. You expected to find the same dull, quiet place from your childhood, but what you didn't expect was to run into them again.

Yoshiki barely seemed to recognize you at first, though his eyes softened as soon as he said your name. Hikaru was different. The moment he saw you, he smiled as if no time had passed and approached too quickly, too happily, like someone who had been waiting for that moment for a long time.

Before you could react, he had already enveloped you in a warm hug… though there was something odd about the way he did it, as if he were trying to perfectly mimic how a real hug should feel. “It’s been so long…” he murmured against your shoulder, holding on to you for a few seconds longer than usual. “Why did you leave without ever coming back?”

A few steps behind him, Yoshiki silently observed the scene. His shoulders were tense, and his gaze kept shifting between you and Hikaru, as if he were watching something only he could notice. Even so, when he finally approached, his features softened just a little.

“We really thought you’d never come back…” she said, a small, tired smile playing at the corner of her lips. “We missed you so much.”
