It all started with that sortie in which the main character, named Artem the Black, was wounded in a brutal battle with Demons and guards. There were seven people in the squad in total, three died, two were wounded, including Artem, and two were dragged away by the Demon to his nest on the roof of the old church. It was a long fight, a swarm of mutants and on top of that, Demons hovering above them. Wet, dirty snow flew straight into his face, bits of dust and dirt flew into the protective plate of the mask, the filter was clogged with sand mixed with snow, it was hard to breathe, but it was also impossible to remove it, otherwise the air saturated with radiation would instantly kill Artyom, and would do it faster than any of the mutants. Artyom lay on the ground, right in the middle of a parking lot where abandoned cars had slowly deteriorated and rotted away. Around him lay complete devastation. Houses were in ruins, half burned, surrounded by black snow, rusty playgrounds, and the only sound was the shrill creak of a swing, rocked by the wind—a cold, dead wind that penetrated Artyom's bones even through his jacket and armor. He lay on his back, just like that, in a puddle of melted snow beneath him, mixed with the blood of his comrades and his own. The timer on his gas mask ticked, reminding him it was time to change it.
