Sometime after this, after Aizen became a captain, he revealed the secret of Kyōka Suigetsu's absolute hypnosis to Gin. Gin was still a child at the time he was told this.[19]Sometime later, Gin served as a lieutenant in the 5th Division under Sōsuke Aizen. Aizen and Gin rescued the surviving young Shinigami Academy recruits Momo Hinamori, Izuru Kira, and Renji Abarai, who were on field training, from a group of massive Hollows.[20] Kira later became a lieutenant in the 3rd Division under Gin.[21] Gin eventually became captain of the 3rd Division around the same time that Byakuya Kuchiki became captain of the 6th Division (less than 49 years ago). Gin, however, even as captain of his own squad, was still a loyal subordinate to Aizen.[22] At some point during their captaincy, Aizen, Gin, and Tōsen secretly visit Baraggan Louisenbairn, the King of Hueco Mundo and Lord of Las Noches. Aizen and Baraggan engage in a superficial conversation as Gin and Tōsen watch. Aizen then releases his Shikai and shows Baraggan the destruction of his army at the hands of two other captains.[23] Once upon a time, when he and Isshin Kurosaki were captains, Gin, along with Aizen and Tōsen, continues to conduct Hollowfication experiments while attempting to locate Shinji Hirako's group. When questioned about their current progress, he tells Aizen that they have accomplished nothing.[24] While watching the ensuing fight between Isshin and the Hollow creature on a monitor, Gin notices that the captain left without permission, noting that this could lead to trouble. Dismissing his concerns, Aizen asks to take a closer look. Later, arriving at the scene of the battle with the others wearing cloaks to conceal their spiritual pressure, Gin watches as Aizen injures Isshin.[25] Afterwards, Gin notes that Isshin realized the Hollow wasn't the one who injured him, and asks Aizen if it would be okay to leave when Isshin is still alive and suspicious of what happened.[26]

Gin is one of the more mysterious Shinigami, largely due to his constant smile and perpetually narrowed eyes, combined with a subtle irony, merciless sarcasm, and a somewhat mocking politeness. Discerning his true intentions is extremely difficult. Many find his demeanor and appearance unappealing, and very few trusted him (and that was before he was revealed to be a traitor). However, Gin seemed aware of the impression he made on people, and repeatedly played with the feelings and emotions of those around him for amusement. He somewhat intimidated Rukia Kuchiki and Wonderweiss Margiela; Rukia, for example, recalled that whenever Gin spoke in her presence, she felt as if she were being entwined and strangled by snakes, even when he wasn't speaking to her. Gin speaks with a distinct Kyoto dialect, polite but somewhat evasive.

Since childhood, dried persimmons had been his favorite food. Having planted and grown numerous persimmon trees around the 3rd Division's barracks, Gin would dry the fruits and then distribute the dried persimmons to other divisions. One day, after mistaking dried sweet potatoes for dried persimmons, Gin developed a dislike for the vegetable. In his free time, while still a captain, Gin would often take walks around Seireitei. Although his hobby seemed to be people-watching, he also seemed to enjoy finding victims for his pranks.[4]

Gin has shown himself to be quite perceptive, seeing through Sōsuke Aizen's past manipulative personality and his emotions and feelings, correctly deducing that Aizen enjoyed Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends' invasion and their successes within Las Noches, something Aizen himself confirmed,[5] and noticing that Aizen was surprised by Momo's arrival during the battle in the fake Karakura Town.[6]

Gin is unremarkable in his attire and does not wear any unusual items. However, his overall appearance is unusual. He constantly squints, rarely fully revealing his sky-blue eyes.[3] He appears to be a young man in his early twenties, though very thin and tall, with sharp features that give him a somewhat skeletal appearance. His hair has an unusual silver hue (his name refers to the color of his hair, 銀 (gin) is Japanese for "silver," though his name is spelled differently).[3] Gin's usual facial expression is a wide grin, and he only breaks his smile when he rarely shows signs of irritation, surprise, confusion, or even sadness.

In Hueco Mundo, Gin changed his attire, much like Aizen and Tōsen, after they left Soul Society. He began wearing a long white cape over his usual hakama. The hilt of his sword is clearly visible beneath the cape through the deep neckline reaching to his waist. Sometime later, Gin traded the black Shinigami hakama for white hakama, similar to those worn by Arrancar. His cape has a deep neckline reaching to his waist and hips. His cape has wide sleeves, concealing his hands, like the sleeves of a kimono. The lining of his robe and the edges or layers of the undercape are black. Apparently like everyone else, Gin also wears black tabi and white waraji. In this attire, the hilt of his sword is not visible.
