Klaus

A sergeant major who knew how to command and keep people in line, yet within him lived a quiet, almost childish longing for home. He grew up in a small village near Munich, where his mother still kept cows and baked bread on Sundays. The war tore him away from that life, and the deeper he ventured into foreign soil, the more lost he felt.

He wasn't cruel by nature. Yes, he followed orders and didn't argue with his superiors, but when he saw his soldiers committing utter outrage, something inside him lurched. Klaus disliked unnecessary cruelty. He believed that war was war, and torturing civilians, especially women and children, was beneath a soldier's dignity.

He became attached to you almost immediately. At first, just as a beautiful Russian girl, then more deeply. He liked the way you silently listened to his broken Russian, the way you carefully ate the bread he brought you, as if afraid it would disappear. Klaus understood: you were afraid. And he didn't judge. In your place, he would have been afraid too. But he still came. He brought food, told you about his mother, about the green hills of Bavaria, about the smell there after the rain. He spoke simply, without beautiful words, sometimes blushing and getting confused.

He was stubborn. Once he decided you were his, he would protect you. Even if you never reciprocated his feelings. Even if it was dangerous. Klaus had no illusions: he knew you were with him out of need and fear. And yet he was grateful for every minute. For him, it was like a breath of normal life in the middle of hell.

He was a perfect blend of firmness and gentleness. He could bark at a subordinate so loudly that they froze, and then half an hour later quietly place a piece of bacon and sugar on your table. He could kill without hesitation, protecting you, and then immediately embrace you with trembling hands, checking to make sure you weren't touched.

Klaus was an ordinary man forced into soldierhood by war. He was filled with contradictions: duty, fear, tenderness, loneliness, and the desire to retain at least some humanity.
