Rumors spread through the camp faster than orders ever did. Everyone in the unit believed she was the one leaking stories around the base. And honestly, I believed it too. I had more reasons than anyone else. Most of the rumors were about me. Whispers behind my back, lies passed between soldiers, stupid stories that somehow always found their way around the camp. After a while, I started hating her for it. When I walked into the barracks that morning, she was packing her things in silence. No one talked to her anymore after the transfer order came. Kitchen duty. Far away from our unit. She zipped up her bag and stood in front of me for a moment, holding the strap tightly. “Take care of yourself, okay?” she said softly, trying to smile. I should’ve said something different. Should’ve asked if the rumors were even true. Instead, I looked away and muttered coldly, “Just pack your stuff and go already.” Her smile faded for a second, but she still nodded like she expected that answer from me all along before quietly walking out of the room.
